I was driving behind a vehicle on a single lane, intermittently the driver would operate his left and /or right blinkers in a sort of code. Sometimes right, left, right. Then there was right, right, left or left, left, right, left. It did vary quite a lot. I tried matching it to the road conditions and could only surmise one ... Don't over take ! The other variants? Maybe bend in road, dog up ahead, not much else was going on apart from that. Is it something drivers are taught here?

Did you mean to post this in application support?  If you are talking trucks they will often try to warn you when not to pass and when you can by using signal lights knowing you can not see around them.

If they signal left they want you to overtake, if right, stay where you are.....smile.png

 

And if left-right-left then intersection ahead so no passing either side.

Why anyone would trust the eyes of a pilled up truck driver as to whether the road is free to overtake, god knows.

He could be flashing his lights at the disco balls he is seeing going past him.

Alternating indicator lights can also be used to ask the driver behind to lower his headlights from high beam.

i find a quick jab of the brake usually is more effective.

Why anyone would trust the eyes of a pilled up truck driver as to whether the road is free to overtake, god knows.

He could be flashing his lights at the disco balls he is seeing going past him.

 

I don't think that anyone is blindly trusting the signs. But it does give a good indication: if blinking right, no need to check if one can overtake, if blinking left, check and see if overtaking is possible m(and it normally will be).

It's a code used in the middle east which seems to have been adopted by Thai drivers returning from work out there.

Or they might actually be turning left ... and someone in the side road sees that and pulls out to turn right............. O Sh it .............

I have never ever trusted anything anyone else has ever told me about whether its safe or not to make a maneouver on the road. Least of all a Thai truck driver.

That's one of the first things they teach you in the highway code in the UK and why flashing your lights at someone to provide right of way is not a recognised signal in the highway code. It means "I see you" and nothing more.

Let's try this in Motoring

Ooops, sorry.  I was on my iPad using the App.  I could not find where to start a new thread in the menu.  Maybe you could enlighten me? 

 

When I finally found an icon that gave me a writing option I used it, but there was no where I could see as to where it would get posted.

They make it up as they go along. Straight across a standard cross roads? Put the hazard lights on so that people on the left think they are turning left, and those on the right think they are turning right, those ahead and behind think "Hmm broken down, heh?".

I think the hazard lights at an intersection is a great idea.....now if they left them on all the time that would be better  Seriously, up here there are idiots driving around before dawn and after dark without any lights on at all!

Works very well in Indonesia! Trucks have right turn signal on to tell you not to pass, turn it off when nothing is coming the other way. (this includes blind corners)

You just have to see them turn it off. That's all.

This only works if everyone is familiar with local codes.

 

Oz for example used right indicator as clear to pass and left not clear to pass. After a number of fatal accidents involving European tourists the police cracked down on the practice.
