I have to go to Dubai next month to attend a conference and I thought I'd bring the missus this time since she has been nagging me for years about tagging along.

I checked around a bit and the Emirates and Ethiad web sites both have links to online visa application sites. How hard is it for a Thai to get a visa online?

I am legally married but have only a Thai marriage certificate so I would have to get it translated. Where can I get that done?

If anyone has "been there and done that" then please share your experiences - thanks..

If you fly with emirates they'll organise the visa in advance for you. Been there, done that. Fairly easy if you are married and she is flying with you.

Since the powers that be in the UAE take a rather dim view of extramarital affairs I plan on getting our marriage certificate (officially) translated to English since my wife has not taken my surname.

Did you do that?

nope, given I was the Thai passport holder travelling, ironically (given your situation) to visit my non-Thai girlfriend, now wife, who was working there. But I didn't tell them that.

I also had to supply from memory evidence of funds or work, which I had. I was told by the emirates desk 'not to worry' about my visa application, given they were really only on the look out for single ladies travelling to the Emirates.

But as you say, just get it translated and get the MFA to certify the translation. Any competent translation agency in BKK can do it all for you, unless you want to schlep out to Chaeng Wattana and do it yourself. Just make sure the translation gets done according to how your names are recorded in English in your respective passports.
