rambling Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Hey guys, anyone out there using a video camera on their helmet or bike such as Gopro / Drift? If yes what camera and why did you decide to use it? Cheers.
dave_boo Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I got the Contour+ 2 for the reasons listed below. It is mounted on a RAM mount utilising the 1/4" threaded insert (standard camera mount). I didn't want to be just another GoPro user, but now due the troubles that Contour is having...I kinda wish I didn't go that route. Another thing was that the spring loaded contacts for the battery aren't the best; often during the middle of recording it would lose contact just enough to corrupt the file. A shim (torn off piece of a ciggie pack) under the lever fixed that issue though. Locking Instant On-Record switch Still Photo Mode 1080p Video 270° rotating lens 170° wide-angle lens Laser alignment Mobile connectivity GPS Video Mapping Up to 120fps Live streaming External microphone jack Waterproof case included
ll2 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I got this sony last year. Sony hdr as30. http://m.store.sony.com//compact-pov-action-cam-zid27-HDRAS30V/B/cat-27-catid-All-Action-Cam Can get it from MBK department storr bkk. It has wifi, bluetooth and gps. Also better picture quality and bettet for vibrations. It can show the video as in the photo if gps is enabled. Bluetooth and wifi is great as you can use your phone as viewfinder and upload the videos from camera to your phone on the run. They have now sony hdr as 100 model though which is better. Shurup Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I have a Go Pro the original HD model. Got it because there were no alternatives at the time. It does the job just fine, it is surely behind many of the newer models but I wouldn't care about a couple of fancy features to justify the upgrade. yankee99 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I use a gopro but not on my helmet as wind really affects you. If you can afford it theres really no better choice.
ll2 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I use a gopro but not on my helmet as wind really affects you. If you can afford it theres really no better choice. that is one of the reasons why i bought sony. it is more aerodynamic so does not bother you much on helmet. still even sony bothers above 180 kph.
taninthai Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 have the drift hd but my experience is not great ,i am on my third one in 2 months ,first one battery overheated and got stuck in camera ,2nd camera had battery issues they replaced battery and same problems started again so they then gave me another new unopened camera and threw in a free handle bar mount for all my troubles, only got the last camera two weeks ago to be honest its still in the box not even charged it yet been busy with other things. when the camera works its great has remote control and loop record is great saves you recording hours of nothing exciting happening, the customer service is also great i will say i purchased mine in uk though so it was easy to keep returning it ,i have spoke to them a lot in the america office and they are helpfull and you can just post things straight back to them if inconvenient to return to shop. i have never fixed mine on my helmet no doubt you do get some good footage from helmet mount but really not to keen and prefer mounting it to bike.

prestburypark Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 GoPro Hero 3, not had it long but like it...got a flip up lid so attach to handlebars, there is some vibing of the pictures. Still experimenting and struggling with editing, but thats another story.
Familyonthemove Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Go Pro Hero 2. Helmet mount not ideal in the city as you need to look around so much when riding in BKK traffic - but as a handlebar mount it's excellent. Hero 3 is an improvement in ease of use as it has a remote App on the phone.
A1Str8 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 But why not just wear pivothead instead. Better, cheaper, easier etc
Markaic Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Nobody ever tried a Möbius. I love it so much I have 2 Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

dave_boo Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 betamax was nice! Not sure why they changed to VHS later! They changed to VHS because that is where the market was. The market went with VHS due to it being cheaper for the consumer in the US. Thus JVC then ramped up production, and start shipping in Europe where apparently the price difference was even more. Throw in double the time you could have recorded to VHS...it was just a better value.
T_Dog Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Have had good luck with this one. It comes with a waterproof case and various slide on mounts that attach to the side of the helmet rather than the top. https://midlandusa.com/xtc-cameras/product/xtc280vp-hd-wearable-action-camera/

rambling Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Lots of options, some I've never heard of. Now it's even harder to choose lol thanks! :-)
T_Dog Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 By the way, the Midland one I referred to does not have the wide angle lens that the Go Pro has. It is more sensitive to vibration even with the image stabilization but I like the non-distorted video. The Midland is also very positive in being turned on and off, versus the clunky nature of the Go Pro controls.
ll2 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 http://www.sony.net/Products/di/en-us/products/me3d/ http://www.sony.co.th/product/hdr-as100v i think sony hdr as100 is the best now. only gripe, no 4k recording. but go pro does not have it fully fluid either. you can buy it from a sony store at 15990 thb. https://my.sony.co.th/sonystore/whats-new.aspx?ID=731 but i am sure can find it cheaper at MBK mall. by chance, i bought sony hdr as30 at a track day. they gave me a very good deal well below market prices and also threw extra battery, a 32 GB class 10 memory card and a wrist camera band for free. that guys have a shop at MBK but dont remember the name. at MBK, you can find any brand cheaper.
rambling Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 There's a promotion now for the HDR-AS30VB going for 9,990 Baht including bike mount which seems like a decent deal. https://my.sony.co.th/shopping/th/store/view.aspx?Category=161&Model=1739&Color=2512 Looks like very minor differences between it and the AS100 version which has slightly higher HD resolution, splash proof without case.

I'm usually hesitant to buy this kind of stuff in MBK. Did you get a local warranty? Aren't the deep discounts for grey market imports?
bobbin Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 That Sony HDR AS100 is being sold by Sony for $269 (8600+baht) in the States. Probably cheaper on ebay...

It sells for the same price on eBay + about $50 in shipping and customs. Not too bad actually. But no warranty as Sony's warranties are local, not global.
bobbin Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 ^^ I was a bit surprised by this so checked Google. Apparently there is a "global" warranty known as a TLW. Tourist Limited Warranty for purchasers buying outside their country of residence. Not applicable to all countries but both USA/Canada and Thailand are participants. One year warranty. I would not pay almost double in Thailand and if there wasn't a warranty (seems there is), I would just buy another new one for what they want here. http://www.sony-asia.com/section/warrantyinfo 1

By "selected authorized sellers", and for "selected products". Maybe some eBay vendors will be able to do that, I'm not sure. Worth checking.

Hdr as 30 is also.good and 9900 is good price. If i dont remember wrong, i bought mine for 11 k or 12 k though and nearly a year ago plus all those extras. BlackArtemis Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Had a go pro 3 black, utter horrid battery life, 35-40mins without wifi on. Even with 3 batteries it was dead the majority of a 7hr ride.
ll2 Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Sony battery goes around 3 - 4 hours. Less if you use gps and wifi. Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
