Appreciation for Chiangmai people

Before we move to Chiangmai, my husband and I spent sometimes with real estate agents, looking for a house we like.

On our first trip, we hired a taxi guy who took us from airport to hotel to take us around for a day trip. We went to see hilltribes, butterfly farm and Doi Suthep.

As the trip was stressful regards to the limitation of time and a confusion of which location and price range we can effort, we were both exhausted. It was also extremely hot that day.

I carried most of everything while mr husband took a photo at Doi Suthep. I always put B20 in to several boxes in any temple we go. But that day I put B100 at few boxes in a temple.

I asked some people to take photos for us. As we may need our photos as an evidence for me to apply a visa to USA, as my father in law is 80 and had stroke two months ago. My husband may need to visit him sometimes in a future.

While I was attempted to take a best shot for an Australian woman, I put my video camera in the floor, sitting on the floor next to those professional photographers who offer B100 for any phone they may take for you. I completely forget that I lay my video camera next to me!

When we were about leaving, I realized that mr video was not in a case. I was panic. I was afraid that my my husband will upset at me. But he was not. He was afraid that it will ruin out trip and I will blamed myself for months.

I walked to the nun, told her the story and ask if I can contact anyone to see if someone found it. She suggested me to get back to those officer and asked. She blessed me.

I was panic. I walked to an officer in a uniform, asking if they had found my video camera.? He told me they found one but he asked me for a brand which we can't remember.

I almost cried. I said we can't remember. They asked for my ID card and started to write a report. Then they hand over my video camera. I told then I want to turn it on and prove that it was mine. Here we go, it's was us!!!

A professional photographers suggested me that I should give him some rewards. But that gentleman told me that he worked for the temple. He does not need a rewards. I did not want him to feel that we were insulted him. I gave him a "wai" and told him how much we appreciated his kindness. I never forgot his face till today.

Now we are in Chiangmai. Next week will be a month here. I'll go back to Doi Suthep soon and will get some gift for that gentleman.

Hope this topic will warm your heart.

Happy to hear everything worked out well for you....though I had to take a break in the middle of your post to stretch and drink some coffee. :-)

I like Chiang Mai too. Hope the rest of your stay is equally enjoyable and positive.

I hope so. I am paying my mom a visit for her BD and mother day in Nontaburi, perhaps a week and more. Then I'll head back to CNX.

I want to continue the same project I started once we found out that mom has cancer in 2012. I started my project to make hats for cancer survival at Siriraj hospital, BKK.

I'll make a research and will start the project in CNX. Perhaps as my own BD gift *_^[attachment=278539:ImageUploadedByThaivisa Connect Thailand1407594518.164190.jpg]

In that case, I hope that you and your Mom have a pleasant holiday and birthday celebration. My best wishes for her continued strength and good health.

I very much appreciate people with positive thinking and who do not lose faith in people. --- especially OP on Thai Visa Chiang Mai where too many malcontents spew their venon.  I have also lost or just mislaid  things temporarily from time to time, just as Cuddlycat did, and they have always been returned.  No one has ever stolen anything from me in many years here.

Yes, sh*t does happen.  Thefts do happen.  And, perhaps worse.  Often, in reading posts here, I wonder where and how, indeed, some people live their lives.  But my experience has been the same as OP.  And I think her idea of returning to give a gift is a gracious and appropriate thing to do.

Let us know how you and your husband like Chiang Mai...when you have been there for awhile...we like to hear from people like you and your family...

Well, my husband and I have been here about six years and we still like Chiang Mai very much. People still return mislaid things to us.

In fact, things come to us and we have no idea where they come from. People know I help elderly foreigners and sometimes we return to our condo to find that someone has given an no-longer needed set of crutches, a cane or walker (Zimmer frame, I think the Brits call it) to the condo security guard, with instructions to give it to me. They know I'll pass it along to someone who needs it, which I do.

I once left my smartphone at an outdoor food court (many food vendors around).  I went back 2 hours later, the guy who sells water ran to me & gave me my phone.  He wanted no reward.  This has generally been my experience with Thai people.

I enjoyed the OP.  I wish more Thai people would participate in TV to give us a counter-perspective to the complainers & doomsayers that reside here.

I have been living in CNX for over 6 years, and I can't think of anywhere else I would want to live.  And the Lanna Thai people here are, for the most part, wonderful.  I went to Doi Suthep once and actually left the keys in the ignition of my brand new CBR 250.  Later, when I walked back to the bike I panicked.  That's when this little boy of about 6 came out of the nearest shop with his mother and handed me my keys.  She told me she saw me leave them and took them to keep safe for me.  I went to as different vendor and bought a wreath of flowers and tucked a 500 baht note into it and took it to the woman to give to her as a gift.

Before I learned to speak even basic Thai, my wife would write in Thai on a piece of paper what she wanted from a local market and I would take it and then ask a vendor to help.  After a while it got to be a game to see which vendor would get to me first to help me when I went to the market. In the 6 years I've been here, I've only had 2 incidents where things were "less" than friendly, and I'm fortunate enough to say that both ended with me coming out the "winner".

All in all, I have yet, in my life, met a better, happier, more helpful class of people.

I do like the people up in the CM area. I have respiratory issues, or else I would consider living up there. It is a great area. I have run into a lot of sophisticated Thais in the CM area. Well traveled, and well read. Very interesting crowd. Great restaurants, and nice culture too. Also love how progressive the town is. A lot of alternative stuff going on. Healthy food, and alternative lifestyles. And did I say reasonable?

"Hope this topic will warm your heart."

It did very little for me, it was a silly story, nothing special, just a normal day out.

I've been here 2 mo. Lost excess weight and stopped biting my nails(60 yr habit). I'm at peace here and feel like a tremendous negative weight is off my shoulders. I had no idea how much negativity existed in my day to day life between friends (?) The news, and from the general public. Happy to be here.

Thanks for your concern. My husband like it more here. The house which we sign a year contract has a magnificent character as it's our landlord's first house in CNX. There is a lotus pound, a gazebo, banana tree, custard apple, mango, lemon grass etc in a house compound. I start to grow basil and chilies. My husband and I plan to grow more plants when I return from BKK. We just have a bird couple building their nest at our back terrace. I can easily sit, enjoy my coffee and watch them build their nest. It might be done by now and a female bird will lay her eggs soon. I can't wait to see the baby birds.

I think my husband gains more life control here. It annoyed him in the past when we stayed in BKK. But now he just can take off with his garmin and get some groceries for me. It takes only 15mins to Central festival, Big C, Lotus, Rimping and etc. We have more outdoor activities which is good for relationship. We are going to get a bird feeder as well.

A Chiangmai's character slows me down. Living in a big city makes you rush into every single thing. People in Chiangmai are more laid back. Their dialogue are smooth. When they talk to you with "chao" instead of "ka" will make you kinda step back and slow you down. I hope my English is better than it is now as I am not sure if you understand what I am trying to explain.

I had learn to ignore a negative or sarcastic comment. There are so many people who decide to enjoy life and be optimistic. There are those who do opposite. I think I know who I want to become and who I want to associate with.

My husband and I both lost weight. We enjoy taking care of our garden and take our dog for a walk everyday. (We adopt a beagle). She is so sweet and will walk to us, sit and give us her paw if she wants to go for a walk. I miss her already.

There is other example of how nice people is Chiangmai are.

Less than 2weeks ago, I took my husband to do 90 days report. We just moved to CNX on 15th July, means we did 90 days in the past in BKK.

We should report our new location to other office behind a copy machine @Chiangmai immigration office. But we did not know. When we did our 90days, the officer told us to make the relocation report and bring a copy back to her. So we did.

The caption at the other office told us that the landlord suppose to do it. I told my husband in front of her that we should do it some other day as I am not sure when the landlord will be available. The captain said, "don't worry. As you just move here so I'll take care of it this time. Lets your wife fill this form". Then she started to ask about us and all officers there started to joined the conversation. They were nice to us.

The captain can easily say no and demanded our landlord to make that report. But she let us pass through without giving us a hard time.

One of the best paragraphs I've read on this forum in recent weeks.
Well, I must say that the OP's English has greatly improved from the first post.

Believe it or not, my speaking is getting worse these days. Not sure why. I start to have a hard time thinking about words. Both in English and Thai :(

It's sad to say, but some of the rudest people you will meet are the foreigners. For some unknown reason there are many who will respond to these forums with sarcasm and outright meanness. Just have to ignore them. I love my Chaing Mai life. Welcome.

I had A LOT of those when I started my threads here. They can't change me for who I am. I have decent members here who support me. But I don't want to mention their names as I respect their privacy.

I even realize that some foreigners even mentioned here that he does not want to post anything here anymore regards do negative responds.

I tell myself this, "we can't change people's attitude but we can change only our attitude towards them"

Or, "dogs that bark, seldom bite"

Twice I have lost my wallet. Once in a tuck tuck and once in a store. An hour later the tuck tuck driver returned with it nothing missing. Another time in a subway sandwich shop. They went through my whole wallet and found a business card for where I was staying. Called there and described me and the manager notified me. I went and recovered it. Every thing in it over 20,000 baht and two credit cards. Being a cheap Charlie (not really) I had to leave 300 baht with them and walk away they tried to refuse it.

My experience has been good here. I am friendly with them and they return the friendliness. You might have bad experience with the people looking to sell the tourist some thing. It is how they make their living. some times they are just plain over aggressive. Other than that I have no trouble with them even the sellers who think I am a tourist I just walk away and don't waste my time or there's.

Flame removed.  This is a feel good topic, a rarity in the CM forum, so let's try not to degrade it.

And welcome to CM Cuddlycat.  Nice nick BTW.   welcomeani.gif
