Will I ever be able to stop my BP medicine?

Featured Replies

If so, how will I know when? I currently take Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg and Metoprolol (half a 100mg tablet). I have been on the same medication for about 2 years and my BP is usually about 125/75. I haven't smoked for a couple of years, drink very little alcohol and have a low salt diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Can I just stop the medication and see what happens to my BP?

Are you under a doctors care?  You probably should be and asking there as it is not a good idea to stop many such medications in one go after taking for a time.  And it would seem to my layman view that you may still need them.  Your readings are about what mine are and doctors does not want mine any higher - but that can be based on person to some extent I suspect.

It is nothing less than your life. For a very reasonable fee you can consult a physician and provide him a series of BP readings, perhaps a few times each day for a recent week, and tell him of your desire to reduce then stop your BP Rx and manage with the issue lifestyle. Be cautious of advice suggesting you should or could do it on your own. Its possible, of course, but not wise. You should have a doctor consider your entire medical history, age, weight, etc., and advise you with knowledge, not jailhouse medicine, or a "friend of my aunt..." kinda story.

Everything you do is your own risk.

But if it would be me, I would measure blood pressure several times per day and than half the dose and look what happens.

Having everything in an Excel. If it looks good take it off. Than go to the next doctor and let you check again.

But it is what I would do (not necessarily what you should do)....If you do it and die...don't blame me afterwards....

My mother (60) got told that she must take medication or she will die. Instead she lost 15 kg and makes exercises daily.

BP is almost normal and she is 70 now and still don't eat anything. She can drink alcohol but if she drinks too much she gets problems with the BP......

You should not stop taking Metoprolol without medical advice. Stopping suddenly can cause heart attack.
