Just a quick question. When applying for the family visit visa, does the sponsors passport need to be signed. We have just received my mothers passport copy for my husbands visa but she has forgotten to certify it.

Your mother is presumably supplying accommodation for the visit and maybe contributing towards the costs; but she is not the sponsor and a copy of her passport is not required.

Unless your husband is travelling without you specifically to see your mother.

Though if your mother has travelled to Thailand to visit your husband in the past, it may be useful to show this.

Assuming your husband is travelling with you to visit your family, then you are the sponsor; even if you are not contributing towards the cost of the visit in anyway. Sponsor in UK visa applications is not the person paying for the visit, it is the person supporting the application; the reason for the visit, if you will. Although in many cases, this is the same person.

You should provide a copy of your passport to show

  • your immigration status in Thailand, if you live there; or
  • if you don't live in Thailand, when and for how long you have visited Thailand and your husband; and
  • whether or not you and he have travelled outside of Thailand together.

I recommend not just copying the personal data page and those with entry and exit stamps and/or visas on, but the blank pages as well, to show that they are blank.

You can self certify the copies thus: "I (full name) certify this is a true copy of (page number) of British passport (number) sign, date."

If you do wish to include the copy of your mother's passport, I wouldn't worry that it isn't certified; your passport is the important one.

I didn't realise this. I am getting very confused now. It states on the sponsorship form that the sponsor must be a resident in the uk. I am currently not a resident there, as I am a resident in thailand. I also have no evidence that I live at that address. So I just presumed I couldn't be the sponsor. Also on the sponsorship declaration it also asks for my finance and my mum would be supplying this. Can my husband have two sponsors then? If my mum is the sponsor and not me will this mean his visa will get declined. Also on the sponsorship undertaking it says that I am signing that I will be responsible for his maintenance, accommodation and care. He's going to the vfs centre next week and. Though we had everything in order and now it seems to be falling apart.

I was advised to complete the sponsorship form su07/12. I Will be providing a letter of support but as I am not resident in the uk at the moment my mum would sponsor my husband.

Who advised you that you need the form?

It is not usually required for family visit applicants; if it is, then they should ask you for it later.

The sponsor has to be in the UK at the time of the visit; but does not have to be so at the time of the application.

Have you read the pinned topic recommended to you several times before?

I have read the uk visit visa basics. I have read it so many times. The more I look at it, the more confused I seem to feel. I'm just trying to get my head round the whole sponsor thing. I am sorry if it have irritated you, I am really not meaning to. So can you tell me what is the difference between a sponsor and a person who is providing a letter of support. I thought the sponsorship undertaking form defined that you are the sponsor. Am I just defining that I am sponsoring the applicant by writing that in the letter? Thanks. And I am sorry to bother you.

Just go to the .gov website and follow the step by step instructions!

https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa

I suspect you are making things more complicated for yourself!

A sponsor is recommended especially if the trip is being financed by him or her. There is no requirement to have one but it will help clarify where the money is coming from. The supporting letter is just that!

Fill in the on-line form and if you get stuck go to the visa basics as it is all there and post questions each time you get stuck. Over analysing everything will drive you potty!
