THE SEPTIN9 TEST: EARLY DETECTION OF COLORECTAL

CANCER MADE EASY WITH A BLOOD TEST
Make Use of the Options for Colorectal Cancer Early Detection

Many people are afraid of facing colorectal cancer, but it pays to get screened because the disease develops very slowly and, if it is detected early, is completely curable in most patients. Positive outcomes depend on the use of currently available screening methods. If you are over the age of 50, you should attend colorectal cancer screening regularly because the risk of developing the disease rises with age.

Many different methods for colorectal cancer screening are now available. In addition to e.g. colonoscopy and fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs), you can be screened for colorectal cancer with a simple blood draw: the Septin9 test.

The Septin9 blood test permits robust and reliable detection of the biomarker mSEPT9 in blood plasma. This biomarker is specific for colorectal cancer. The methylated gene SEPT9 is found in colorectal cancer but usually not in the healthy colon. This so-called epigenetic modification can be detected by the Septin9 test in a blood draw.

More important than choosing a special test is the decision to be screened because the best test is the one that gets done. A good opportunity to ask about colorectal cancer screening is at your regularly scheduled visit with your family doctor, gynecologist or urologist.

many thanks for help

I don't know where you copied that from, but it sounds like maybe the promotional material of one of the manufacturers. The Septin9 test is not recommended for routine screening. It has a not insignificant rate of false positives and in any event if positive has to be confirmed on colonoscopy. And unlike colonoscopy, will not detect precancerous polyps). f you are planning on a colonoscopy there is no reason to get this test.

Research on it done by scientists not employed by diagnostic testing companies has not shown it to be any more accurate than simple testing for occult blood. There is some research from people on the payroll of the companies trying to market the test which is more favorable but that obviously has to be taken with a hefty grain of salt.

And no, I don't know of anywhere it is available in Thailand.
