UN General Assembly kicks off, Gen Tanasak to make speech on Sep 27

BANGKOK, 25 September 2014 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn is set to deliver a statement this Saturday at the 69th United Nations General Assembly, which has raised its curtains in New York today.

At the UN Headquarters in New York City, the 69th session of the UN General Assembly has officially commenced under the theme “Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda”. US President Barack Obama and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff were among the many international leaders giving an address before the meeting began.

On behalf of Thailand, Gen Tanasak, in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs, is leading a delegation to participate in the session. A speech will be given by him on September 27 under the topic “Sustainable Development of Thailand in 2015”, in which the focus will be placed on the sufficiency economy concept, the government’s endeavor towards national reform and sustainable democracy and Thailand’s role in tackling global issues, ranging from human trafficking to environmental problems.

While in New York, Gen Tanasak is also scheduled to attend the ASEAN-UN Ministerial Meeting, of which participants will include ASEAN foreign ministers, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and President of the 69th UN General Assembly Sam Kutesa. The Thai Foreign Minister will also hold a discussion with the American private sector, with a view to bolstering its confidence in Thailand.

"...the focus will be placed on the sufficiency economy concept, the government’s endeavor towards national reform and sustainable democracy and Thailand’s role in tackling global issues, ranging from human trafficking to environmental problems."

The rest of the General Assembly will by holding its breath and listening to every word, since Thailand is recognized to be a world leader in all three categories.

Perhaps it would serve Gen Tanasak better if he listened to representatives of other countries that have achieved healthy economies, sustainable democratic governments and have successfully tackled the aforementioned global issues.

If you say so but I don't think that is the purpose. The purpose is to show the world Thailand knows what to do and is working very hard towards those goals.

Who says he won't be listening to those countries?

Not everybody has tunnel vision.

One hopes that General Tanasak informs the UN of inroads being made in human trafficking, Labour conditions , refugee treatment, environmental degradation , wild animal trafficking and the mafia at all tourist hotspots, perhaps a joyful listener will be China and its despot friends. coffee1.gif

Credit where credit is due.Thailand's splendid record on preserving the environment and upholding human rights is well known to all but no harm will be done by reminding the General Assembly. It is also excellent that he will broadcast the merits of the Sufficiency Economy which teaches all to be happy and contentedly know their place, a wonderful example for a troubled world.

Bon voyage General and don't be influenced by those unworthy cynics who have had the nerve to suggest you are an absurd throwback who is comically out of his depth about to be cold shouldered by the rest of the world.Ignore them because you have the best of the Thai Visa community behind you.

It's a certainty that other delegates to the UN will be on the edge of their seats to hear stirring remarks from a military general representing Thailand as a foreign minister. It's for sure he will speak to solving the 12 year long insurgency and killing in the Thai south, corruption, fight on terror, smuggling, intellectual property theft, and democracy. The UN delegates will be thrilled to hear his remarks in all his military splendor, ribbons, medals, polished boots.
