BKK: English speaking farang friendly dentist for checkup/cleaning?

Recommended Posts

I usually go to the dentist in the Philippines but I'm here for now and saw some blood while brushing. I think I need a cleaning, nothing major. I'm afraid to find a dentist here though because I don't speak Thai and I don't wan to be taken advantage of. Can anyone recomend and english speaking dental office with fair prices and honest evaluations in Bangkok? I'm near Asok but can travel for a good dentist.

I usually spend about 720 THB (equivilant) for a good western style cleaning/office in the Philippines.

Thanks!

Suspect most larger clinics will be in the 1-2k range. Smaller office soi type office will often be less but best to have a recommendation as doctors/cleanliness can vary greatly. The lady-boy I once had at such a place spent most of his time piercing my gums. I now use an excellent doctor at a major hospital dental department but pay about twice your amount. Also it would be best to have an x-ray taken for first visit so that would likely be about another 1k.

I think I'd rather just go where you go even if the cost is more. Could you please provide the DDS and hospital name? Do they speak english/cater to foreigner?

Thanks.

The place on Soi 17 is fine. Rate depends on work done but Max 1500 Baht.

Smokes, get out of the farang enclave and their inflated rental prices.

Head to On Nut, 500 baht, opposite Big C, or turn right at Big C and take the first dentist on your RH side.

Depends on work done, the prices are all displayed in Thai, standard prices throughout the kingdom.

If you ever head out there you will realise, they all speak English.

Never mind carry on as you were.

I had one dentist who told me she didnt feel confident enough to do the work I required, best I go to her teacher/mentor.

She was on the phone toute suite and made me an appointment in Udom Suk, root canal and rebuilding a tooth cost me 10k.

Never mind, head off to the rip off prices available elsewhere.

Whats the difference between an English speaking dentist and a cheap one?

To me for the sake of 500 Baht its irrelevant....YMMV.

Correct me if I am wrong, you dont live here do you?

Its nothing to do with the 500 baht, its the farang tax that matters, or in the Phillipines, skin tax as its known.

Well that's an interesting remark.

I have my dental treatment at this place....price and service suit me.

If you don't like it...up to you.

Great stuff, glad to hear the price and service suits you.

Never been there so sorry cant comment.

I prefer to go to normal priced dentists who offer the same service for 1/3rd of the price.

Never mind if its on your companys credit card, who cares, head to Bumrungrad.

Its a bit like farang complaining about being charged 200 baht per beer in some farang enclave of Bkk, while the rest of us drink the same beer for 70 baht.

As you say, I didnt like it, up to me, I took my money elsewhere.

Enjoy your stay.

Been using Phyathai Dental Hospital for quite a few years - can't really compare it with anything else but i am satisfied with the quality and price. I think you will find most dentists like pharmacists in Thailand speak English . Must be part of their university courses i guess.

I agree with that, I use Phyathai its only a short walk from Phyathai BTS station and I have been going to Dr Panlert for several years and also recommended him to several visiting friends who have been hugely impressed with the price and service.

He speaks good English as do all of them including the nurses and my most recent check up and clean cost 1000 baht.

I like it as I always arrive early and I am usually in the chair about 10 minutes ahead of time and out within 30 minutes and I feel he has done a good job and I get the usual reminder to report back in 6 months.

Having used the low priced options in the past found one using autoclave as magazine storage (the one place I actually spotted a unit). Dust levels before drilling making it look like a sandstorm (another office). And pain is your gain mentality at yet another. A little cheaper yes but in none was the price that much lower than a first class facility would have been.

So yes you can get done for less at some smaller facilities but it will be very much more dependent on the dentist and there ability to do what you need done. In larger facilities they are more likely to provide the dentist with that ability automatically and all be of good quality. So a family dentist is fine but for most of us believe established facilities are the safe option.

Two votes the Phyathai. I think I will give them a shot. I only mentioned English speaking because I'm noticing Thai's tend to get upset when I can't communicate and also I want to make sure I'm getting proper treatment and hopefully less chance of being ripped off. It wasn't really about price.

Dunno if it's up to date or not, but Phyathai's website seems to show Dr. Panlert at Phyathai I, whereas Phyathai II is the facility nearby BTS Sanam Pao. Which of the hospitals are you seeing him at???

I think recommending individual dentists based on personal experience is one (good) thing, but recommending entire dental clinics or hospitals is an entirely different (and not very reliable) matter.

Many of the better-known dental clinics and hospitals here in BKK catering to farangs are quite large in terms of their numbers of dentists, and they of course run the gamut in terms of experience, skills, patient manner, etc.

In all likelihood, any particular place is likely to have some very good dentists, and on the flip side, some very average or perhaps even subpar ones. So just encouraging others here to visit this or that place for a good experience seems to me to be not very useful or probably accurate.

As an example, I've been to Bangkok Dental Hospital a number of times over the years, and I had an excellent experience there with a senior doctor (Dr. Thipparat) who did an inlay and some fillings for me. But on the other hand, I've been totally underwhelmed by several of the routine dentists there who have done my checkups and cleaning, so much so, that I stopped going there for those services, since they seem to serve as the gatekeepers in order to see the other (more senior) dentists.

The dental industry here seems to mirror that of the hospitals -- tons of "specialists," but it's hard to find a good general physician/dentist.

I don't need anyone to replace all my teeth or do a dozen implants. I just want a good dentist who do my cleanings, an occasional filling, and most importantly, someone knowledgeable and communicative who I can discuss my dental care and treatments with. And I'd much prefer my actual dentist to be the one doing my cleanings, and not just pawning the work off on some junior/just graduated staff whom I don't know and may or may not ever see again.

Did you figure this out? I want to make an appointment with him.

No... not yet... I've been busy pursuing related issues, and haven't quite gotten to checking directly with Phyathai yet.

But you can call the hospital and get English speaking staff there, certainly in terms of someone in Phyathai II's Dental Dept. being able to tell you whether the doctor has hours there or not.

but I do use Dentalis, the dentist clinic at Vejthani.

I really like the service and atmosphere. Not cheap though.

A good clean, about 1300-1500.

I believe that's comparable, in terms of price, to what both Bangkok Smile and Bangkok Dental Hospital are charging for their cleanings...

But in my experience, Bangkok Dental Hospital seems to do a more thorough job on their cleanings than Bangkok Smile -- though I suppose that can vary depending on which dentist you end up with.
