This <deleted> is very smart and logish, he paid it only for his big face from papa kapao.

I guess he will be a police officer with this brilliant mind ...

Just imagine waht good could have been done with 25m THB - a school? a hospital? perhaps an orphanage for disabled kids???

Time the HiSo rich kids understand what really matters in life...

If I were the father, I'd feed him the plate and the plate license papers bit by bit for lunch and he wouldn't go to "play" unless the lunch is finished!!!!

This is what I meant but instead some think its envy or Thai bashing.

As for Thai bashing. almost 13 years in Thailand and the same spent with a Thai woman so I don't think so.

I'm assuming the money goes to the government. Why are we complaining?

Hey, I wish some more rich people would pay ridiculous amounts for vanity plates-- it would ease the tax burden on the rest of us, both Thais as well as citizens the world over. Maybe we could even get decent services out of our governments-- the ones they've been chopping back and abandoning ever since the rich decided they didn't have to pay progressive rates of tax. Services like healthcare and public water. I hope the rich dudes (they all seem to be men) all buy those plates, starting with Carlos Slim, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and trotting right along to Amancio Ortega (who?), the Koch Brothers, and the Walton family. I hope the plates become "must-have" among the tip-top elites. Maybe they would drop a few dozen million dollars or pesos or baht on each. Buy away!

Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth, people.

The most prominent member of the family, Sumet, has held numerous senior civil service positions and been President of the Council of Thammasat university.

He also had a very good education growing up, including a Masters in Political Science at Montpelier University and some sort of certificate in Economic Development from the World Bank, which suggests to me that the family was already wealthy.

See http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/สุเมธ_ตันติเวชกุล for more info (in Thai).

His father is a real estate businessman in Chonburi.

He's richer than most farang in Thailand.

Get over it.

Civil service much more lucrative, imho...

I sort of understand the uber rich who pays a small fortune for a special plate number. Usually comes with a great car. I guess it's to gain face and to implicitly tell everyone he has more money than they will ever dream after several lifetimes of hard work.

But to put that special plate on the crapiest and ugliest car on the market, the nissan almera? I don't get it.

What was he doing with that car in the first place, having an infinite amount of money available? I thought the nissan almera was strictly bought by retired expats, living on a modest pension.

I have no objection, I once paid a GBP1000.00 (oh yeah, proper money lol) for a "Private Plate" in the UK but now I realise it was just a "stealth tax" and a materialistic item that replaced things that were missing in my life at that time. At least mine was on a reasonable motor...a Nissan what?

<deleted>?! A 25 million baht plate on a 500k car? He could have bought a Ferrari or something! I don't understand rich people sometimes. blink.png

The importance of Thai Hi-So and that understanding that everybody has, that you are richer, more important and superior is a fundamental rock in Thai society...and obviously true and accurate...Thai Hi-So is the classiest and best of society and something to be desired until attainment.

The Thai bashing and rich people bashing specialists conveniently overlook the fact that the proceeds of these nice plates' auction goes to road safety.

Since Farangs love to post all kinds of critics on this forum regarding the Thai roads and Thai driving, ... they should be happy that this nice guy contributed 25 million to their safety.

If not, ... there is indeed only jealousy that drives this thread :)

And so many young Thai people can't even afford to go to university. Sick...

Sounds like you're jealous because a 19-year-old is more successful than you are. It's funny that so many farangs get so jealous when they hear of a Thai person with more money than them. Perhaps it hurts that they're not top of he pile like they thought they were.

If you're so concerned about Thais that can't go to university, why don't you do something to help. Maybe sponsor a student or set up a charity to help. No chance of that though, as your type just prefer to whinge all the time.

Idnguy you seem to be very well versed in Liberal Double Speak.

Where is the problem? As far as I understand the money is used for charity reasons. He got his 1111 and a charity got 25mio THB.

The money from the auction will be contributed to the Road Safety Fund and other campaigns for safe driving and helping the disabled who are victims of road accidents.

Stop blaming the kid.

Blame the stupid father that gave him the money and allowed him to bid.

Correct. He is only a kid. What does he know, except my daddy is crazy rich, and allows me to blow alot of his cash on trifles. It is up to the father to instill some values into his kid. Which apparently, he is not doing. I can only hope they are giving massive amounts of money to charity, and people in need.

It's his Families money and he blew 23M Baht of his future inheritance for a License Plate. BIG DEAL! Who Cares? Not me, because it's none of my business and you should make it none of yours. If You have been here long enough, you should realize it's a Status and Privilege obsession for Thai's. And that's all it is. coffee1.gif

What would the people on this forum say if I said that I have two of these auctioned plates?

Not that expensive though... But still...

I guess I must be stupid

1กก1111 is a plate many people here would dream to have...
