Nobel Prize winner John O'Keefe concerned over immigration policy
By James Gallagher

(BBC) Nobel Prize winner John O'Keefe has warned the UK government that polices on immigration and animal research are risking Britain's scientific standing.

The US-born neuroscientist won the prize for rat research into the brain's inner "GPS system".

He said immigration rules were "a very, very large obstacle" to hiring the best scientists, and animal testing rules could prevent vital research.

The government said top foreign scientists were able to work in the UK.

Prof O'Keefe, 74, was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine on Monday.

He showed in 1971 that a set of nerve cells became activated whenever a rat was in one location in a room. A different set of cells were active when the rat moved to a different area.

He argued these "place cells" - located in the hippocampus - formed a map within the brain.

What a stupid man.Just because he gets an award for experimenting with rats he thinks he can interfere in the UK s immigration policy. He could be thinking of joining the benefit swindlers himself and rip-off the British tax payers like many others are doing.Obviously,O Keefe has no idea what is going on.

In any case,it is about time all this Nobel prize winners business was put to a stop. Who do these Norwegians think they are? A bunch of old fuddy-duddies sit round a table and dishes out awards in their" out of touch" part of the world , and everyone treats it as being so important. The Nobel prize is meaningless and pointless. Who cares? its a joke.

I thought Nobel Prize is a Swedish award not Norwegian ?

IMHO it became irrelevant when it was given to PLO Leader cum terrorist - Yasser Arafat.

But there is a difference between Nobel Prize for Science and Nobel Prize for Peace.

One means prestige, the other is purely politically motivated.

Why does he not do it the easy way, fly the scientists to France, get them to post the documents back to the next in line, then they should jump into a U.K bound truck and having no paperwork, entitles the scientist to smuggle himself into the U.K.

The Nobel Prize stopped having any credible relevance when Obama got the peace prize for not being George W Bush and being half black.

It was earlier than that and goes back to Henry Kissinger who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

Kissinger's critics point out that the US was still carpet-bombing Cambodia the year he picked up the prize and he played a part in the Vietnam War with up to a million Vietnamese civilians dead. He's also been accused of war crimes, thanks, in part, to America's provision of arms and support to the South American dictators who carried out Operation Condor, an anti-communist campaign of repression and terror that claimed the lives of thousands of people.

With regard to the award to Kissinger, American satirist Tom Lehrer observed at the time that 'political satire was dead'.

Kenio. We British did not emigrate to the countries you mention. We colonised them, which was a very fashionable thing to do in those days. We advanced these countries by building cities with schools, hospitals, communications, roads. We built the Suez canal for the Egyptians and many other things. We British are proud of this. It was the thrust and energy of european adventurers that advanced these countries to a standard that they would never have achieved themselves. Look how the europeans modernised Australia. If it had not been for them the country would be an ant-eating dump instead of being a modern european- style country. This is completely different to the benefit scroungers who have come to Britain to steal money from the British taxpayer and not to make any contribution at all. This O keefe man should learn more about the facts instead of sitting in his Lab. playing with his rats.

The Suez Canal was designed Ferdinand de Lesseps and built by the Universal Suez Ship Canal Company both of which were French. The British government opposed the construction of the canal from start to finish and sent agitators in to start a revolt amongst the workers who were building it.

Scientists!! #$&^@ The think there is nothing but science, an Iinsular view at best.

They remind me of lawyers who say their ONLY concern is to see justice done for all, but It's mainly for illegal immigrants, terrorists, and left wing losers.

Both groups largely rely on government funding.

If it wasn't for those scientists and their government funding you wouldn't have this internet thingy to post your thoughts on...

Science and technology are intrinsically integrated into the political structure, so no Nobel Prize is sans political motivation to promote an agenda.

Disagree, sorry. Science and technology are tangible values. Nobel Prizes Awarded in this field are open, transparent and acknowledged by world scientists. They are justly respected.

Politicized Peace Nobel Prizes are given to politicians by politicians. No respects. Very dubious. Just look at controversial recipients names. I'm not sure but even Idi Amin Dada was once considered(?)
