Hi All,

I have noted in other posts mentions of insurance companies either accepting international drivers licenses or not. But I haven't seen any mention of names. Do any of you know what companies accept or for that matter reject international drivers licenses. A few websites I’ve visited are only in Thai and many of you know that phoning is not a pleasant or useful experience in Thailand. Thanks in advance and hope TV members have a great week. :o

terdsak_12 is correct. You don't need a driver's license to get an auto insurance policy, but the driver operating the vehicle involved in an accident will need to have one if you want the policy to respond to a claim. All auto insurance policies in Thailand contain exclusions for unlicensed drivers.

It is unlikely that an insurer would attempt to deny a claim for no DL if the driver had a valid home country DL with a corresponding international DL and had been in the country a relatively short period of time and whose immigration status precludes getting a Thai DL.

When it comes to claims, I think insurers use a case-by-case approach based upon the facts of the situation and how the police may assess the validity of any given driving document(s) when the incident occurs. For this reason, you probably won't get an insurer to confirm in advance what is and is not considered fulfilment of the licensing requirement, short of having a Thai DL.

If you are eligible to obtain a Thai driver's license, you should get one, as this will remove uncertainty.
