BANGKOK: -- The Police Hospital has opened a hotline service to allow policemen who are stressed to speak to a psychiatrist or someone who are willing to listen to them and to give them counseling to ease their stress.

The launch of the 1599 hotline service follows a string of suicides and suicide attempts among several policemen said to be suffering from stress. The latest suicide attempt was reported in Banglamung, Chon Buri, Thursday night when Pol Sub-Lt Bovornchai Thanachaisak, deputy inspector for suppression at Banglamung police station, shot himself in his head with a service pistol. He was seriously injured and was rushed to Bangkok-Pattaya hospital by his family.

The victim’s wife, Mrs Pornchanok, said that Pol Sub-Lt Bovornchai was diagnosed two months ago of having lung cancer in the third stage and had since become stressed. He also let behind a suicide note saying that he took his own life and bequeathed all his properties to his wife and asked her to look after his parents.

Pol Gen Somyos Poompanmuang, the national police chief, said today that it was necessary for the national police office to take steps to help policemen suffering from stress as the number of suicides and suicide attempts among policemen are on the rise. The superiors will have to be responsible if their men committed suicides, he added.

He disclosed that psychiatrists from Police Hospital and officials had been assigned to man the hotline service to help the troubled cops deal with their stress problem.

"The Police Hospital has opened a hotline service to allow policemen who are stressed to speak to a psychiatrist or someone who are willing to listen to them and to give them counseling to ease their stress."

And what about the rest of the country who suffer exactly the same stresses and strains of life?

Great news for the BIB for those police who are stressed when on the job perks and financial bonuses arn't living up to expectations.

Maybe the hotline can include a scheme to support financially where patches and rackets arnt supplementing the paycheck enough, they can pay it back later with 200% interest rolleyes.gif

It must give lot of stress waiting for that one person that wants to bribe you and then collect your 10.000 Baht reward!

It must also be stressful covering up a murder at a beach for only a 1 million reward.

Good to have these services for the RTP.

There may be extra calls from Bkk Traffic Police now that the Bt 10,000 ' reward ' for arresting motorists who offer bribes has been scrapped

where is the stress coming from? Maybe the government MAKING THEM DO THEIR JOBS for once!

EXACTLY. Stress i.e. FEAR that after they are exposed at being incompetent and corrupt they are sent either to jail or back to the paddy fields.

Some of the boys down south may be a little bit stressed by international press reports on how perps are stitched up?

When you turn a blind eye to what is going on; you condone practice's that are not right. How can one say that corruption is now on the agenda to be cleaned up, when from the top practices that are unpolice like are being done to secure a conviction?

If you are a honest cop, sure this stuff would be stressful. If you report it, you become one out and potentially put your life at risk.

Maybe a financial adviser would be better that way you can legally hide your days takings,

And supply every policeman with a money counting machine like the ones in the banks. That would relieve a lot of stress :)

Stress is getting to the end of a shift and only having 50 baht for the communal kitty after pulling a Thai with a truck full of water melons driving in the outside lane when the rest of the team have all found a farang or two and are putting in a grand.
