Deputy PM confident new Constitution will be drafted in 1 year's time

BANGKOK, 15 Oct (NNT) - The deputy prime minister in charge of legal affairs has expressed confidence that Thailand would have a new Constitution by next year, adding that general elections may have to be on hold until 2016.

According to Deputy Prime Minister in charge of legal affairs Wisanu Kruangam, as Cabinet members are not allowed on the Constitutional Drafting Committee (CDC), the Cabinet will have to nominate candidates from outside.

However, the Cabinet, as well as the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has opted to wait for the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) and the National Reform Council (NRC) to nominate their candidates, to avoid duplication of work.

The deputy prime minister added that the chairperson of the CDC may be selected from within the NLA or the NRC. He noted that the 36-member CDC would have 15 days to formalize after the NRC’s first meeting on October 21st.

Mr.Wisanu expressed confidence that Thailand would have a new Constitution within a 1-year time frame, as stipulated in the provisional Charter. He noted, however, that additional time would be needed to allow 3 additional electoral laws to be drafted and political parties to be formed, before general elections could be held.

The deputy prime minister said general elections would likely be held in 2016, while reassuring that the government was not deliberately delaying the process in order to extend its stay in office.

Wasn't it only a few months ago that elections were definitely touted for 2015?

Hard to envisage elections next year......!

Take your time and get it right. There is no rush to get the fugitive and the airhead back in office.

The new constitution will be ratified by the new freely elected unincumbered government at that time then?

The reforms are just the way to get the old school back in power. Haven't we seen this cycle before?

A polite term would be "mission creep". To most rational thinking people though, this is known as "bleeding obvious" or "we told you this would happen, but would you listen, would you @@@@"

A new definition of the verb "reassure", exclusive to "juntaspeak", it seems. Now, if I wanted to reassure someone I would have said general elections will be held in 2015, sorry 2016, not "likely to be held", but hey, that's just me coffee1.gif .

Yes. Anyone who has ever read any Thai history (I suspect that is NOT those who champion these "good people" herein) knows how it works. The circle remains unbroken.

Haha, and all the usual suspects have gone to ground until the sun comes out again, Banharn, Police Captain Fugitive Sons, Samak (permanently) and so on.

The Thai wheel turns but the Cart of State is going nowhere because the kwai wants his perquisites.

Does Thailand need a constitution?

The people need one but this one wont be for them it will be to protect the interests of the elites.

How long could it take to rewrite a constitution that has been rewritten too many times to count? They must need to figure out how to protect themselves against future legal actions since they violated the last constitution. What a joke.

Does Thailand need a constitution?

Easier if they just said, everyone for themselves. Because that is basically how it is, with the exception of LM charges.
