Inheritance tax contributes little to government coffers

BANGKOK: -- Academicians say the government’s plan to collect 10 percent of inheritance tax for those who are left an inheritance of more than 50 million baht will merely contribute minimal revenue to government coffer.

Somchai Jitsuchon, Research Director of the Thailand Development Research Institute s (TDRI), said that the government’s implementation of the inheritance tax policy will not contribute much to its revenue collection.

He said although, the government could get more revenue if it decides to increase rate of value added tax (VAT) but it has to keep track with the growth of the economy.

Meanwhile, he said the negative income tax policy may be branded as another populist schemes but it will definitely cost less than the rice pledging scheme introduced by the previous government.

He said the scheme would help redistribute income to the poor but strict registration system is needed to prevent subrogation
