HongKong or Singapore

Hi all ,

Going to take the wife away for a 3 night / 4 day trip next week and undecided wether to go to HongKong or Singapore.

Going to be a bit of a treat for us both so looking at the upper end of the accomodation selection ( well saying that circa 30k / 40k for the accomodation 3 night stay )

All opinions welcome on which destination to choose. Im kinda leaning towards HK as I think it maybe more of an "experience" to immerse ourselves in than Sing?

Nice restaurants , entertainment , shows , etc. are on the wish list.

Would we get a better deal booking a flight/hotel combo through a travel agent or take a flight only and book the hotel seperately online ?

I know its a case of different strokes for different folks but general opinions appreciated.

Not averse to going to a club or seeing local historical sights too so quite a broad spectrum of options is cool.

Would it make a difference going midweek opposed to the weekend ( flight costs / hotels etc. )

Any reccomendations of hotels in both HK and Sing also appreciated.

Oh yeah maybe a daft question but the mrs doesnt need a visa to HK does she ? ( yes shes Thai )

Thanks ;-)

mods feel free to move this post if you wish , typed this out while on the Phuket Forum and dont wanna rewrite it all.

Go to Singapore. Clarke Quay is a nice place for a beer, same as Raffles Hotel, and Sentosa Island.

The protests are still going in HK, so, anything could happen there. Free movement around HK has become difficult.

Have you also considered Macau? Cheap flights to Macau, and you can head over to HK for the day, if you wanted, so, you get to see both.

Mrs doesnt need a visa for both.

In Singapore the Ritz-Carlton or Mandarin Oriental are great hotels at Marina Bay or RoyalPlaza on Scotts at Orchard Road. Take the Club level, it is worth every Baht. Dont miss the Casino and the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong is also a great hotel.

In my opinion Singapore is a more relaxed city then Hong Kong and not so many mainland chinese running around. Also think about the weather.....

Thai Nationals get entry stamp no problem.

We have been to Hong Kong and Singapore a number of times. Just back from Singapore last month.

I would say there is much more to do in Singapore. The Singapore Zoo gardens is a great day out, Sentosa is good for a half day, plus a walk through the underground casino. Singapore flyer for a 30 minute ride round the wheel. The all day tour bus pass is well worth the money, maybe a half day experience. This trip we explored the Botanic Gardens off Tanglin road. You need strong legs to view all the gardens have to offer.

Someone mentioned the Marina Sands hotel with the giant pool on the 54th floor. I checked the price, cheapest Agoda deal was over 17,000 baht +++ per night... gulp. We stayed in a 5 star off Orchard for 7,000 baht +++.

Hong Kong offer Disney Land, a great whole day out, ferry over to Macau for another great day out, up to the heights view point on Hong Kong island. If you decide on HK then I would advise stay on HK island rather the Kowloon side.

Would vote for Hong Kong. It's more colorful and the light show at night at the harbor is nice. Also a lot of waterfront what I really like. Hotels the Conrad is nice as well as the IC. Price range could be hard to fit for 3 nights Hong Kong and Singapore are both not cheap. Also join the Hong Kong horse race at night. Very nice event.

I just stayed at marina bay sands... Don't bother! The pool is amazing, but like the rest of the hotel it's packed out. Service is ok but not 5 star Asian style service... Food and drinks are top $ and very average .... You are basically paying for the privilege to take a selfie in the pool...

Singapore for sure.

It's an hour and a half away by plane. I've actually driven down from Phuket through Malaysia. It's a great journey and can fill the car up with awesome crap that you can buy on the way.

It's a little over 1400 kilometres one way. Not much more than a drive to Bangkok.

1. Copy of blue book (letter from owner of you aren't the owner)

2. Copy of insurance and licence.

Need to purchase some insurance at the border and get plate translated and stuck in the car.

Whole checkpoint took 25 mins to sort.

Both great cities, with lots to do. Although, I think Hong Kong has a wider variety of food. It’s a toss up for me. I would base my decision on weather.

"I think Hong Kong has a wider variety of food." - I disagree.

Singapore has its ethnic quarters. Indian, Chinese and Malay. Each area has its different cuisines.

In my opinion, there is a wider variety of food in Singapore.

You are correct that Singapore has ethnic quarters. Wider variety? Maybe in your quarters, but in Hong Kong you can get anything on any street.

In Singapore they can street food as well. They call them Hawker stations, and they are everywhere.

Safest place in SE Asia.

Lots of theme parks and waterparks throughout Malaysia. Didn't stop at any.

You can take two routes. The scenic but fast bypass route to Singapore or the slower through cities and towns route.

I bypassed it all to Singapore and explored in the way back so I didn't have to carry all the junk I bought into Singapore.

I'm actually considering going again before Xmas. Such an amazing drive.

Craving a Laksa now.

"Craving a Laksa now." - this comment made me think of my favourite food in Malaysia. I love the Malaysian satay sauce - it's perfect.

I get it with the chicken sticks. It's normally an entree, or a snack, but I've had them for a full meal on some occasions. :) See below photos.

OP, be sure to try them.
