HI - We are heading to Koh Smaui for New Year this year -we will be arriving just before New Years and staying for 2 weeks. I have heard Chaweng Gardens Resort is very reasonable and quite clean. I wanted to book some accommodation for the first few nights - can anybody give a review on this accommodation or recommend anywhere else that is 2000 baht or less at this time of year? I wanted somewhere with A/C, a TV and a fridge, maybe a pool?

I have not actually stayed there but friends of mine have. They say it's good, reasonable and clean. It's right close to the action if that's what you want, noisy, busy beach and topless sunbathing, music playing etc, but hey, each to their own. Have a great time.

Hi biddy,

I got your e-mail but shall reply here.

The place where I stay is the Chaweng Gardens BEACH Resort/Hotel (I just checked the T-shirt!!). It is set away from the main strip and is very quiet at night apart from fireworks on the beach and the occasional staggering people. They do play music (the usual Hotel California) but it stops at around 11 pm. The rooms are clean with AC, TV, shower, mini bar etc. and are cleaned everyday. They can also keep your valuables at reception. I think the sheets are changed every other day. The rooms are around 1000 a night and you get a discount for the longer you stay. I would try and get a beach side bungalow but the other rooms are all good as well. Try and get one on the ground floor as the stairs up to some are a bit rickety, especially after a night out.

They do not include breakfast in the price but the restaurant is open from 7 am and the food is cheap and cheerful. They do a nice barbeque on the beach in the evenings where they put the tables right on the sand.

Suega, I think you are confusing hotels!!! When we met it wasn't that noisy was it?

No I'm not confusing hotels. During the day it meets my description - that's early in the day, the part of the that you don't see when you are on holiday! :o

Yes ive stayed there twice.

Its a great resort for the price, I was there last new years and let me give you a tip.

Ask for the rooms closest to the reception as they are newer and go for the same price. Its a fantastic resort and the manager is a good bloke.

Its basically right across the road from where they have that green mango and the other clubs.

I highly recommond the place, the rate should be about 1000 baht in peak for aircon rooms a night and 400-500 in the bungalows with no aircon

also a great place to eat is ALI's hut on the beach side (at night). alittle more then the rest but I got the best sevice there then any resturant ive ever been to in the world. They really look after you

My advice is to anyone is DO NOT STAY HERE. I had one of my worst holiday experiences here!!!!!! My mobile/cell phone was stolen from my suitcase and my lock was super glued back on!!!!!! I was charged and over charged for things i did not order or use, the rooms were infested with mosquitos and the staff were unfriendly. Plus you can find better places to stay in for the same sort of price. This is an honest review if you know whats good for you DO NOT STAY @ CHAWENG GARDENS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CON!!!!!!!!!

I disagree :o The price of the room doesn't have a whole lot to do with the honesty or dishonesty of employees. Frankly, you are probably better off in a very small family run place than in a place that hires low-cost labor.

I agree about the family run place that is samll and the manager can pay attention to the guests..and the honesty or dishonesty of employees

However... I beg to differ on the price of the room.

If you want your room to be clean and spray from isects in a good location with staff that speak english and that has maintenenced rooms. (western standards) then pay for it. the higer you pay the higher service cleanliness and attention.

when you pay 40-50 USD you may find a realy nice hotel but the chances of poor service are higher.

lower paid staff do not gurentee better service.

Good point. So here's the next question...

With such a bad experience the first time around, why in the hel_l would he go back to the same place? Samui is loaded with alternatives.

hi all

Its improved alot during the last time i was there (Nov 2006). My room this time had an electronic safe, good AC, hot water and no mosquitos and they offered to spray the room if i found any. It was a completely different ball game than the last time. however last time i stayed in the bungalows which i would never do again. Coming to Samui was unplanned because of the BKK airport blockades I i couldnt fly home to London and I could only fly home from Singapore. So to get to Samui i flew from Utapao airport, Pattaya to Samui stayed a couple of nights and flew to Singapore. I was desperate and only had 3 numbers for hotels including Chaweng gardens, the others were expensive and were charging me alot for late checkout which i needed and when i landed in Samui it was 11pm, and due to problems caused in BKk i didnt get a chance to research alternatives even the mini bus driver was recommending the others to stay where i was staying when being dropped off to the hotel from the airport. Chaweng gardens gave me the best price and i have to admit this time it was alot better and for the money i paid it was great value, great location. i have been back in Samui since Nov 2006 but i just don't like staying in Lamai or Bophut. I hope this answers alot of the questions raised. I take my words back but anyone can have a bad time anywhere...............

Long Beach is good...you get breakfast, newer/bigger and better rooms than Chaweng Garden, a little further down and 1,200 but right by Tropical Murphys/Subway etc

Glad to hear it has improved. But if youever have a mosquito problem, just go to 7-11 and buy that stuff that plugs in the wall and you'll have no more mozzies. I've even taken one with me when I've gone way off the beaten track where I knew there would be a lot of them and never had any problem.

I used that thing for some years. Works fine. I have to wonder whats in it since it say on the pack that it´s not suitable to use it in a room with pregnant lady/babies. :o .

Nowadays we just spray the bedroom a couple of hours before we go to sleep, and keep the door closed. Works fine. No mozz. We usually dont have mosquitos where i live, but if one of those suckers found the way into the bedroom, i will wake up completely eaten out. The Thai mosquitos just love me. Maybe the alcohol-level in my blood? :D .
