BANGKOK, Nov 5 -- The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) believes that investment in infrastructure and special economic zones along the border will maintain Thailand's status as the largest production base of ASEAN.

FTI Chairman Supant Mongkolsuthree said in a discussion on Thai industries in ASEAN in Bangkok today that Thailand remained as ASEAN's industrial production leader, especially in electronic and electrical appliances, automotive and food processing.

He said that Thailand was the world's major exporter of products worth over Bt900 billion annually.

Mr Supant emphasized that Thailand had to retain the status.

"The government's decision to invest in infrastructure and special economic zones along the border helps maintain the status of Thai industries as the biggest production base in ASEAN," Mr Supant said.

However, he urged Thai operators to improve their production technologies to cut costs, emphasize research and development and to patent their inventions.

He also advised garment and textile industries move to special economic zones along the border to benefit from cheaper labour costs using workers from neighboring countries.

The National Federation of Thai Textile Industries reported that the value of Thai garment and textile exports was the 13th biggest in the world, amounting to Bt240 billion last year. (MCOT online news)

Ummm WHAT INVENTIONS PLEASE DO INFORM ME?????

Thai companies are S M A L L as it is the FOREIGN companies doing everything this twit speaks about.

Thailand is bolstering itself to THINK they are leading.

Thailand must be truly worried.

Remember Vietnam 5years ago? NOW look at it. Remember Singapore 50 years ago and Thailand too? They were similar basket cases and one developed a WORLD leading economy. Which one remains underprivileged?

Twits like this SPEAK but never act. And this is what will be their demise.

What a load of codswallop. If you look a little more closely Supant, you'll find that Thailand is the world's 23rd major exporter, and that Singapore and Malaysia are way higher in the list.

Another arse who doesn't know the rest of the world exists... humdinger.

Perhaps we "ought not" confuse Thai opinions and view of the future with facts, statistics or reality. Let's just stay in dream land and wish and hope and "think happy thoughts." LOL oh my.... Thainess in action.

As far as manufacturing is concerned, Thailand is the largest in ASEAN. Malaysia's main exports are oil, gas, and palm oil, while Singapore's are re-exports (ie oil imported from the Middle East and exported to China and Japan). Indonesia's main exports are oil, gas, palm oil, and coconut oil. The rest of ASEAN isn't remotely close to these countries, so as far as ASEAN is concerned, he is correct. The comment about 'the world' is complete rubbish though.

Time though is running out for Thai manufacturing:

2014-11-01

“According to the Office of Industrial Economics, the Industrial Production Index in September dropped by 3.9 percent from the same period last year, while production capacity rose to 61.1 percent from 60.38 percent year-on-year.

The drop in automobile, hard disk drive, petroleum, jewelry and tobacco production is to blame for the Industrial Production Index fall. Vehicles production in September dropped by 27.46 percent and automobile export to markets in Oceania, the Middle East, Central America, and South America fell by 17.49 percent.

The production of electronic appliances shrank by 3.49 percent and that of electronic devices decreased by 4.54 percent. The manufacturing of hard disk drives also dropped by 9 percent, due to the sluggish markets in the US, Japan and the European Union. Food production meanwhile decreased by 17 percent.”

On the plus side:

“The production of electrical appliances, particularly electric fans, air conditioners, and electric kettles enjoyed a rise of 1.59 percent … The steel industry also rose by 11.71 percent.”

Thailand - the hub of fans and kettles.

Wouldn't it make more sense to move the factories across the border??

Or is that too logic??coffee1.gif

Yes he is ONLY correct at present and EXPORTERS move to greener pastures and as you point out, there is OIL and GAS at those other countries which could really hit Thailand in the future.
