Laotian Women Rescued From Thai 'Karaoke' Brothels

NAKHON PATHOM — Police say they have rescued 23 young Thai and Laotian women who were allegedly being helped captive in a karaoke shop in central Nakhon Pathom where they were forced into prostitution.

Anti-human trafficking police organized the raid following a tip off from an NGO worker who received a text message from one of the women seeking help. 16 of the victims are under the age of 18, police say.

One of the victims told police she came to Nakhon Pathom several months ago after a Thai dealer offered her a job at Nong Fuse karaoke bar, where she was told she would earn more money there than she did in Laos.

However, the woman said that she has been forced to sleep with customers and is only earning around 200 baht of the 1,000 baht each client is charged.

According to police, no arrests have been made yet as the karaoke bar’s owners appear to have fled the premises before the raid.

We rescued them.....

To keep certain people away from what we are doing, which is rescuing illegally trafficked women..

So naturally the Thai police will bust the "Thai dealer" and his big men. We will soon read about that bust.

The BIB said there were no arrests because the bar's owners appeared to fled before the raid.

Now just how did they know a raid was about to take place ?

So the anti-human trafficking police did the bust, but the regular police obviously let the owners get away.

On the payroll by any chance?..... Places like this never escapes the notice of the regular police and everyone knows it.

The Royal Thai Police are probably responsible for almost every sufferance Thailand is going through.

It is about time there was an almighty clear out.

Why are they all looking to the guy in yellows crotch area?

I thought he would have a boner being given money....not having it took away.

But hold on, who is he, they surely not taking his money, as the owners fled the scene.

Unfortunately expressions like ' Thai dealer, big men, bust, arrest ' etc don't seem to go together somehow.

So in other words, if they had been paid, lets say 600 baht, there would have been no need for the "rescue"??

Are the women only saying they were forced because they only got 200 baht out of 1000. I thought being held captive and forced would mean just that? Not a paid disgruntled employee?

If they want to catch the people who own, operate and/or protect such places, the Anti-Human Trafficking Police need look no further than they guy standing right next to them . . . the Royal Thai Police. Nothing happens here without their approval and backhanders or their direct involvement.

I'm still awaiting the good generals cleaning up of the force but other than a few token "changes", doesn't look like much is gonna change any time soon.

money will change hands and who care about Lao girls anyway? not the police.... and soon new batch

of girls will cross the Me-khong river and take the place of the other group... life continue

Wonder why the staff wasn't arrested or detained. If these girls were being held against their will, then this needs to be enforced.

That is not done by the owner alone.

These underground businesses are operated by Chinese Thais. Now you know how they can afford their fancy cars.

My thoughts exactly. Also if he collected the money he must know who is collecting for. That would make it easy as pie to get the trafficking pimps.

That is a big problem with some people here. What the normal tourist sees and reads about are typically the 'falang run' bar/go-go in the tourist/commercial areas.

What goes on in the rural areas is completely different and has been going on long before the first tourist set foot on the Thai soil.

If the media can discolour Thailand's reputation with reports from places like Pattaya, Phuket, etc then they haven't been investigating what actually goes on.

Even the commercial areas, get a local to take you out for the night on the wild side in Rayong. That will open your eyes..........

Note: I'm assuming your post was sarcastic in the first place, but it does open a different perspective on what brothels really are here.

There are at least 6 karaoke bars in my small town alone. Many of the girls come from just across the border in Cambodia. I don't think they're being held against their will, but some of their ages would be suspect.

If there are say 10-15 ladies in a shop being held and forced to do nasty things that they do not want to do. Why do they not on mass, stand up, beat up the owner and walk down to the police station.

Sounds like there must be more to the story.

Quite, but there is a big problem in doing this. You see to become a successful(high ranking) officer you must have a lot of money and to get a lot of money one has to do illegal activities. Basically, someone would have to come along and fire 90% of the force. there is only one person with anywhere near this kind of power and he doesn't get involved anymore.

How does one get by in this country without being corrupt? If you are single and basically a tourist or retired, fair enough but when having family, dealing with schools for kids and business/work it is different. I am corrupt but would rather not be in a perfect world but when a RTP Commander - head police officer of 11 provinces offers you protection, it's extremely hard(if you have no real power) to refuse. these people don't like being refused and are dangerous. Wouldn't everybody prefer to live with some kind of protection rather than looking their shoulder every day. Wouldn't one want to know that if they have a car accident, for example, that one phone call will stop them getting screwed by the other guy who has protection. My Father in law was drunk and hit by a pickup truck where his brother as killed. He was charged and put in jail - do I just leave him there? I had a car accident, being hit by a guy on the wrong side of the road head on. they were pinning all the blame on me until I made a phone call. Would you claim to be not corrupt and let the corrupt ones walk all over you as they see you as powerless? Getting one of my kids into a good school because of "boon khun" - is it wrong? it IS Thai culture - repaying a favour. Is it fair? -no but that is why everyone or nearly everyone uses their 'friends' to get on the world.
