Hi,

My mother might have been exposed to Legionnaire disease. The sauna she normally visits has found to harbor it and a person died. We just learned about this and mom is now here in Thailand.

Question is can she test for in here in Thailand ? Would they even know what we would be asking for ?

She has no symptoms though a persistent headache. It might not be related but it worries us a bit.

Its also possible it will develop later as the incubation time is up to 20 days. We are going to the Thai Island just at the end of the incubation time. The question is would testing now help and would buying some antibiotics (to take with us just in case if things start to happen at the islands).

Other suggestions are welcome

If it helps ease her mind at all, the typical incubation period is much less than at 10 days or less.

And Thailand has had reported cases.

It will help her, she just arrived yesterday with my dad. We are a bit angry with the sauna. In the news article it said that they informed all 300 customers. She is a regular and had not heard anything about this from the owner or her friends who go there too. So it looks like they lied. (this was in the Netherlands)

Our worries are only that they would not know how to treat it in Thailand especially the South.

Headache can be a symptom of Legionnaires so keep a close watch. If she develops fever and/or cough, see an infectious disease specialist and be sure to tell them she was exposed to Legionnaires disease.

Urine and blood tests are antigen based so will not be positive until several days after full blown symptoms develop. Sputum culture is nto possible until/unless she has a productive cough. So in short, no, there is no way to test for this now.

Most people become ill within 2-10 days after exposure.

Thanks we will check it and hope the headache is unrelated. She is almost past the 10 day mark and besides this nothing.

The majority of people who are exposed to this bacteria usually just develope flu symptoms, if her immune system is in good shape she should be ok no drinking alcohol for a while would be a good idea and high doses of vit.c will not hurt 2,000, to 4,000 a day for a few days should helpher immune system
