November 8, 201411 yr PTTEP temporary suspends operations due to severe weatherBy Digital Content BANGKOK, Nov 8 -- PTT Exploration and Production Public Co, Ltd (PTTEP) has suspended its operations in the Gulf of Thailand temporarily due to high expectations of heavy rain in southern Thailand which would commence from Saturday to next Monday, the company announced.PTTEP, a subsidiary of Thailand’s largest petroleum firm PTT Public Co, Ltd, said in its announcement that the company is monitoring the weather situation round-the-clock following weather forecasts that a depression was moving towards the Gulf and it has coordinated with outside agencies for cooperation.Currently, PTTEP Plc is still producing natural gas from three wells but it has temporarily suspended operations off the coast and has moved vital equipment, including floating vessels which could be damaged, to safe places, it said.All of its workers stationed at drilling platforms have been ordered to return to the coast, it said, adding that the firm has prepared measures to cope with any emergency situation, PTTEP added.In another development, Fisheries Department director-general Joompol Sanguansin said the ongoing volatility of weather in Thailand with the northern and northeastern regions now cool while the South is experiencing torrential rain, is causing a sharp difference of water temperatures and affecting the water quality.Marine animals, especially fish, could become weakened and contract diseases, said Mr. Joompol.Fish farmers should reduce the amount of food given to them by between 10 – 15 per cent because fishes would consume less.Those raising fish near the coast should move them to deeper waters.The Meteorological Department has issued a warning, saying that a low pressure system is arriving over the Gulf and southernmost areas. North Sea has some very crazy and wild weather, fast worse than Thailand that is for sure. The riggs there withstand all weather conditions, Thailand could learn a lot from Europe about adverse conditions.

November 8, 201411 yr Popular Post The sea has no mercy whether one is on a ship or an drilling platform.I have had some very unpleasant bowel moving experiences aboard ship while we weathered storms in my Andrew days. In my view and I am sure I am not alone in that view is that the decision made regarding the evacuation of personnel was indeed the correct and in fact the only decision that could be made. A drilling platform is replaceable a human life with all its connecting threads to family etc is irreplaceable. Now a suggestion If those of you who decry the evacuation decision feel so strongly about it well why not charter a craft and go and have some ''sport'' riding out the storm? Strangely enough though you might well find it a trifle difficult, nay impossible to actually hire a craft let alone a crew to go with to play heroes. Those that know the power and the might let alone the unpredictable nature and power that Poseidon and his seas have and hold respect both him and them. Remember on Terra firma we are top of the food chain. In the oceans we are at the bottom of the food chain.
November 8, 201411 yr "The N Sea does not get Typhoons. But it does get Hurricane (or Typhoon) strength winds every year and the sea conditions are far worse than you will see in the Gulf of Thailand as the storms have thousands of miles of open sea to build up massive waves. However the rigs and platforms there are built to stand up the harsher conditions. Duh ya think so ?.. The design of the rig and conditions in this instance is irrelevant, its to do with safety of the people, rigs can be replaced, they are lumps of steel, people not so easy to replace In this instance PTT perceived a possible threat to its operations and the people working there, most likely on the basis of what happened during 1989 at a similar time of year and what appears to be similar conditions forming, therefore they where faced with two scenario's : 1. leave everyone offshore, storms hits, its a bad one and people are killed = TV's self righteous bar stool experts blagging on about how Thai's don't care about safety, they haven't got a clue, etc ? 2. They evacuate the people and shut down operations on the basis of the "possibility" of something happening, erring on the side of caution and incurring lost production, but every one is safe, ie they are doing the right thing, but the TV bar stool experts, most of whom, would be sea sick in a row boat are still whinging, bashing and making complete irrelevant comparisons about the North Sea.
