Schools and universities around Phuket have been asked to close during the Asian Beach Games to avoid traffic problems.

PHUKET: -- Around 75 schools have been requested to close between November 13 – 14 for the Asian Beach Games following an order from government officials.

As several international athletes will be arriving into Phuket, the number of vehicles on the roads are expected to double in number, so the schools have been asked to close.

Some schools have only been asked to close on November 14, such as Phuket Witthayalai School.

Chalam Atthatham, Director of Phuket Primary Education Service Area Office told The Phuket News, “All schools are requested to close because both days will be extremely busy on the roads. We want to avoid huge traffic jams on these days.

“It is also a great opportunity for them [the school children] to enjoy the activities as well.

“We sent a request for British International School (BIS) to close, but we have been informed that they are planning on holding their own activities for the students on these days,” she added.

There are some colleges that will not close, such as Phuket Rajaphat University as they simply do not want to.

The public relations officer from Prince of Songkha University (PSU) said, “PSU will not close because classes will not run on these days anyway, as they will be holding a separate conference for the students. In addition, many of the students have also volunteered to help out during the Asian Beach Games.”

Yep, one of the most ridiculous decisions made by the govt. No reason on earth to close them. Thursday and Friday. Gotta love this place!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. For the amount they learn they could easily just close all the schools and hand out certificates along with the birth certificate.

Thai Education = Little if any chance of a prosperous future.

On the upside, it was announced more than one day in advance, so obviously a well thought through and communicated measure.

Unfortunately International Schools are not exempt from this closure, so a 2 day closure due to a few cases of hand foot and mouth disease, immediately followed by the unnecessary Asian Beach Games holiday means a four day break just before the exams, which I am not happy about. Not the school's fault as they made an application to operate normally but it was declined.

I don't know about school being let out, but I think I kinda like these Asian Beach Games!

They are more relaxed about closing schools than I would like them to be. The school my daughter attends in Takua Pa closed for the vegetarian festival, but I saw that schools in Phangnga Town were open as usual.
