Two militants killed, five surrender in fierce gun battle in Pattani

PATTANI: -- Two southern militants were killed and five surrendered in a fierce clash which broke out when a combined force of soldiers, police and volunteers encircled their hideout in Nong Chik district of Pattani province early Friday morning.

Two others narrowly escaped but troops are still on hot pursuit of the escapees.

The combined force of troops from the 24th Special Action Force based in Pattani, police and volunteers encircled a target at Ban Koknod village in Nong Chik following a tipoff that it was used as a hideout for the militants.

Gunshots were heard as government force moved closer in a pincer movement. After the gun battle, some militants managed to escape leaving behind two dead, one was identified as Rusari Berosameh.

Five militants surrendered.

They were later escorted to the Special Action Force base for questioning.

Authorities in the areas were placed on heightened alert with stepped up road checkpoints as they fear of revenges by the southern militants after their heavy loss today.

So they chose to surrender instead of taking a one way trip to paradise and getting heaps of virgins. Those guys really must be determined.

Or maybe they were not at all motivated by religion, but rather other goals which do not see a percentage or upside in a "no surrender" philosophy.

"Authorities in the areas were placed on heightened alert with stepped up road checkpoints as they fear of revenges by the southern militants after their heavy loss today."

Heavy losses? 2 dead 5 captured!! If they had a total of 10 insurgents causing all of this problem I would agree. If there is even only 100 (I am sure there must be much more) then I would hardly consider this a heavy loss. Unless they each weighed several hundred kilograms and I misunderstood where they were going with this.

Is the war in the South a religious war as surmised by many TVers?

Maybe its a war over boundaries because the border between Thailand and Malaysia was set abitaryily years ago after WWII if memory serves me correct.

Many have told me that the Muslims are unhappy with the way Buddhists conduct themselves and also the way they teach the children.

Can some Tver tell me what its all about.

Maybe its tit for tat payback where no one remembers who started it first.

Regards

As said above the deep South provinces were transferred to Thai rule by the British in 1909, mainly as an incentive for the Thais to resist French influence and expansionism in the region. Rather than reply on TV members views why not read up on a Thai military officers interpretation on the conflict, you may not agree, but it's a good starting point.

Gunshots were heard as government force moved closer in a pincer movement.

so they didn't have forces at the back of the house at the start of the raid. hence the getaway

Would you want to be at the rear when the main group is coming toward the militants and a fire fight is raging? I wouldn't. Bullets whizzing around everywhere. No thank you. They were reasonably successful, only two got away and as they seem to have good intel they will get them.
