Steady food price expected despite higher fuel cost

BANGKOK, 16 November 2014 (NNT) – The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is positive that the price of food will rise following the planned fuel cost increase, said an official.

The Deputy Director-General of the DIT Santichai Santawanpas today inspected food pricings at the food court in the shopping center Big C Extra Ladprao 2 in Bangkok.

He said that the pricing is within the range that the DIP has requested vendors to maintain, which consists of the base price between 35-40 baht of main dishes, while ‘Blue Flag’ food price menus are set at 30 baht. This will allow the consumers to have a variety of choice in affordable meals.

He said that the increase in fuel price will not affect food price as the DIT has already insisted the vendors to fix food prices. The change in weather conditions will be another factor to lower the cost of the ingredients, in compensation to the higher transportation cost.

Meanwhile, the DIP now sends 10 general inspection teams to check the food pricing in vendors and shopping malls daily. The public can report any overpriced food on sale to the 1569 hotline, where the DIP will then take action immediately by sending an inspection team to investigate.

Concerns raised over 24M informal workers after AEC integration

BANGKOK, 16 November 2014 (NNT) – The Labor Minister has asked the Permanent-Secretary to prepare policies to aid up to 24 million informal workers in raising their competitiveness in the ASEAN Economic Community.

The Minister of Labor Gen. Surasak Kanjanarat, today addressed the policy concerning labor-related subjects in preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which is to come into being in 2015, noting that Thailand still lacks a clear strategy on this issue.

He said that professional skills and English language competency are fundamentals required of laborers in the AEC market. 24 million informal workers in Thailand will find it increasingly difficult to find work as they may lack professional skills and sufficient knowledge of the English language.

He said that these widespread shortcomings among informal workers are of concern, as the workers don't have sufficient money to seek work abroad and they lack adequate professional skills to work within Thailand. This skills deficit may encourage entrepreneurs to employ foreign workers instead.

The Ministry must find an answer to this problem, said the Labor Minister.

The Minister of Labor has presented the policy to the Permanent-Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, Nakhon Silpa-archa saying that the Ministry must ensure that every Thai person is able to be employed, by addressing the readiness of Thai people seeking employment, as well as developing an employment support system.

He said that modern job databases and job centers must be established with up-to-date employment information. Assistance to the unemployed, persons suffering unfair job terminations and the needs of new graduates are also required.

He also mentioned that employers and the Ministry should work together, as the progress of this policy will be a determining factor in improving the overall rate of employment of the Thai population and the quality of their work.

Two million ya baa pills seized from a passenger van

A combined force of police and military seized two million methamphetamine pills or ya baa from a passenger van in Den Chai district of Phrae province Sunday morning.

Acting on a tipoff that a huge drug haul was to be smuggled by road through the province, the force set up a road block at Samyaek Den Chai to search for suspicious cars that passed through the spot.

A bronze Toyota Grant Hyatt van with a military licence plate and a sticker of the 7th infantry division attached to the front windshield arrived at the checkpoint and the officers there signaled the driver to stop but he instead sped away prompting a road chase.

The pursuing policemen then fired on the wheels of the van forcing it to skid out of the road. Then the driver jumped out and escaped.

Police and the military later searched the van and found inside about 20 bags packed with ya baa. Two million pills were counted.

The van was found to be rented by a conscript identified as Vichai Rangsirikhet. The licence plate was also a fake.
