Popular Post Mrjlh Posted November 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2014 I'm not a follower of this group nor anywhere near being a professional photographer, but if and when I post a picture, I post because I believe it to be interesting and may be of interest to someone looking at it. I have seen some truly interesting photo's here. If they are of high quality I'm not the one to judge except sometimes when I see pictures that stir my senses then it is of value to "me" whether or not it is to someone else. That should be the point of this board. If you want to kick it up a knotch to the professional level then start a "professional" section. One other item does seem to bug me, why do people continually "quote" posts with same photo's? These messages seem to go on for days with the same photo's over and over again. Nothing new is ever derived from it. JMHO.... 6
Popular Post MJP Posted November 17, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted November 17, 2014 I just ran the Bangkok Marathon this past Sunday, and I shot many pictures to capture the mood, excitement, action. I shot individual runners, staff, a mountain of discarded water cups, the sunrise over Rama VIII bridge, a stream of runners divided going one way and the other, low light, full spectrum, the happy medalist, stop action, flowing action...Now I may only post one picture? Which one? Maybe none? Just do it slowly, over time. There's no rush. If you upload all your photos they are competing with one another. Your shots are breathtaking, but when loads are all posted together . . . it takes the magic out of it. That said, if you start a topic and want to add more because it's a theme and needs more photos to make it work, then fine. These aren't hard and fast rules (yet) but just something to consider. 3

Even if one of the pros uploads loads at once it just doesn't work. Takes the WOW factor out of it. 4
MJP Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 MJP, I know what you mean. I was the worst on the board for this a way back when by the way. Dozens in minutes.
Popular Post sunshine51 Posted November 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2014 Quite some time ago I posted a couple lines concerning those of us who are "pros". By definition a professional photographer (pro) is a person who makes 100% of their living by taking photographs (motion or stills). We have our own outlets for displaying our work and many of us have our own websites. However...way back then I stated this forum shouldn't be the place we showcase our "work" as not all posters on the photo thread are pros. But we can offer up advice if we feel like doing so or are asked plus tips on how to make someones photo "better". There's a fine line in all of that so as not to offend sensitive folks although I feel this can easily be overcome given some foerthought before posting by an experienced photog. We can help if asked...IMHO. On another note...there seems to be some agro brewing between forum members on the photo threads for reasons unknown to me and as far as I'm concerned this must cease and desist immediately. Whatever started it, it has to stop. Nobody on this thread is better than anybody else. We're all the same...we're picture takers. Whether we do it for fun or money...we be the same. No matter what verbal language we speak...we be the same. We shoud be/must be...more understanding of each other. 7
MJP Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 All this is about is resisting the urge to posts loads of stuff at once. That's it really. 2
klauskunkel Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Nothing to do with server space. But everything to do with thread space, thread real estate if you like. It's not a restriction, it's just an idea to improve the board for all. Observations about thread real estate: - posting thumbnails versus full-size pictures will save real estate (3-4 thumbnails take the same space as a big image) - obsolete pix, members posting outside links to their images on for example Flickr and some days later remove them from Flickr, which then leaves only a broken link in the thread, followed by comments about the picture which has disappeared.... just a Bikky for thought...

I've begun the process of removing all the blanks and will keep doing so as I work through the threads. Agree about pic size, again I'm bad for this. What I'm going to do in the future is post a much smaller embedded image and a link to the full size instead.
Popular Post shaggy1969 Posted November 17, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2014 Hi Folks First of all I would like to congratulate MJP with his promotion to the rank of Global Moderator, Secondly,I would like to publicly apologize if I offended anyone by spitting my proverbial dummy out a couple of times over the past weeks. My reason for doing so was due to a build up of niggly comments and remarks being posted (not towards me but in general) and I felt that they were unwarranted and unwanted....also I was a little afraid of them snowballing into a much larger problem for our photo community and so that is why I reacted like I did. I highlighted the word community because that is what the Photography and Arts forum is too me and like any community it can only exist and be strong if everyone works together towards the same goal....in our case it is the passion for photography. From what I can gather the aim of this topic is to try and stop mass uploading of photos by members in a thread.Maybe a simple solution to this problem could be if a member has multiple images that he/she wishes to share at one time they could maybe upload them in one post but in thumbnail form? Even if they uploaded 20 images it would still only take up the space of one members full screen shot.... @klauskunkel I would love to see your BKK marathon images,so why don't you make your own thread for it?That way you could upload as many photos as you choose because it is not a common thread that all the members share.Would be nice to see a one off event, similar as to what kruell did with his magnificent bike week thread. The Pros and the Amateurs As quite a few of you have already mentioned we are lucky enough to have some very experienced professional photographers on this forum, What I would personally like to see more on the forum is how the Pro's get the shots they do and more information on the preparation, set up and even tips to aid us budding amateurs into achieving better shots ourselves.Take for example the Portraiture thread that fimgirl started a couple of days ago, when I saw the images that he had posted I was in awe......and thought to myself "how the hell did he do that?" well what about using threads like that for the Pro's to post some of their images along with their own thoughts of the images and what they needed to do to achieve them?I tell you now it would make for one hell of a thread if all the Pro's did the same in that thread....or not? As for the quality/quantity aspect that has been mentioned in the previous posts. What can I say? I am guilty of doing that myself, if we are only allowed to show our crème de la crème images then I should of stopped posting a couple of months ago because I only had a couple of what I thought were pretty decent. Also take into account the different stages of photographic development that we are all at,some people advance quicker than others, take DAL as an example, looking back two years ago to what he is producing now.Others may take that little bit longer (like myself ).......and need that little bit of time and support.....as I said before, this is a community and we can only stay strong by working together. Respect to all Shaggy 8
MJP Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 ^^ You don't arf talk a lot Shag! Good post.
rhythmworx Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 (edited) If space is not an issue then there is no need to post thumbnails. Just post up to max size or as you see fit as per Tywais rules, 900 wide or height is plenty but as the rules state 1024 wide is acceptable. When quoting a photo click the photo in the quote box and tap the delete button, the person quoted will know which post was referred to by clicking the post # in the quote box. On a last note, seeing as its Christmas already and not even December yet I would like to get in 1st and wish you all a very Merry Christmas. As usual Bob Geldof is letting us know it's Christmas time once again Carpe Diem as they say....or if you are Thai, Carpe Pla Edited November 17, 2014 by rhythmworx
MJP Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Ace, you're adding nothing to this conversation. This is about time, space and frequency of posting in the tog forum. Not about the rest of the place.
Ace of Pop Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Perhaps then its just me that thinks its change for changes sake.
MJP Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Perhaps then its just me that thinks its change for changes sake. Nope. Plenty want to see a stop to the flooding of the forum with loads of pics all at once. It's all it's about. Nothing more contentious than that. It was another poster that brought this up with mods and rightly so. It's worth trying this different method of posting to see if it improves the experience for all. I think it will.
Popular Post Ace of Pop Posted November 18, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 18, 2014 I can see that, so perhaps a divided Status for Pro, and one for Happy Snappers with a sense of Humor, who like Etans, Mountain Dew Bottles, Michlin Tubbies..., things a tad Lo Key for the Proes..........Long as it stays Happy. 4
MJP Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 I can see that, so perhaps a divided Status for Pro, and one for Happy Snappers with a sense of Humor, who like Etans, Mountain Dew Bottles, Michlin Tubbies..., things a tad Lo Key for the Proes..........Long as it stays Happy. It's not about pros or snappers. It's as bad when a pro floods the board all at once as well. Flooding doesn't work. They may all be great images but when posted in rapid succession each image detracts from the next almost eliminating the WOW factor. 2
sunshine51 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 ^^^^ M....That nasty blue banner just struck again...outta likes. What you mentioned is correct....that's why there was only one "Blue Chair" pic posted instead of myriad renditions of it I didn't even wanna see anymore...hah!
Ron19 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) All this is about is resisting the urge to posts loads of stuff at once. That's it really. sunshine51 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Sip satang here...No seperate thread for "pro's"...please. Nobody wants to read the "critiques" we will come up with when discussing each others work or posted pix. This is all akin to 2 old ladies bickering over the price of a beautiful apple..or which one gets to have that last sip in the gin bottle. Even in good cynical humour...it can get nasty. Because it usually starts out like this...."Well I would have (name your method or particular way of shooting or processing) and ends up like this..."Why you sorry &(*%&))^$^*)_#^&*" or worse! So please; No Pro Thread(s)!!! Very bad idea...very bad...bad dog, bad doggy...go lay down.
Ace of Pop Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 . There Yer Go Shaggy, a real BAD Dog." Nasty Bag O Washing".. Near as id get to Him. 1
sunshine51 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 ^^^ AoP...Member Shaggy didn't make the post above yours I did...#55. Plus...the pic belongs in the dogs & cats thread...not here. Just FYI. 2
Popular Post harrry Posted November 18, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 18, 2014 Limiting posts will kill this forum. If you want a specialist art photography section go to one of the special forums where you can talk to yourselves endesssly about f-stops,iso ratings, lens brand and all the other things that photographers talk about. A bit like a train spotters forum, dead boring unless you wear an anorak. This should not be a photography forum exclusively. It is one for displaying photos of Thailand and this has been emphasised in the past where it was requested that photos were all posted here and not in forum posts. I enjoy seing the wide variety of photos. Some of the best are terible photos technicaly but in some little corner have caputured a memory of when I was able to go and see them myself. I enjoy this forum and I love to see the many photos of people documenting their days in Thailand. I do not want to come to a forum I have to wear an anorak to enjoy. There is a place for those technically good photos and that may be here but the other ones are what makes this forum special and have made me feel I have friends I would love to meet. 5
harrry Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I think I will wait until the dust settles before I comment , " Tea and Bikkies anyone ? " Jolly good idea! A cuppa always calms things down! A cuppa and a good look at a variety of photos of poster's days.
harrry Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 It looks as though it is time to break a rule I had against using Facebook. It would be nice if Ron, Dancelot, VF,Shaggy and all of those who have real photos PM me a link to their Facebook pages. Less page clicks but why should I care.
