Wheelchair man on long journey to pray for King
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- A wheelchair-bound Thai man continued his journey from Angthong towards Ayutthaya province yesterday, hoping to reach Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital to wish His Majesty the King longevity and good health ahead of the monarch's birthday on December 5.

Sathit Chanthasangsi, 52, who suffers from Ameotrophic Lateral Sclerosis for seven years, departed his hometown in Phitsanulok province on November 15 on a 20-day journey and arrived at Angthong's Chaiyo district on Friday where he stayed overnight at a local hotel. Accompanied by Buddhachinaraj Hospital's medical team, Sathit yesterday received a medical check-up and got his swollen hands - from pushing his wheelchair - treated before departing Angthong.

Sathit said that after saving up Bt1,500 from his old-age allowance, he had decided to go to Bangkok to offer his good wishes to the King. He said he would also present the donation money he got along the way for the King's charity work. He said he limited his daily travel to 50km a day due to his physical condition.

Meanwhile, Buddhist monk Suthep Thaugsuban yesterday led 135 monks to receive alms offerings in Surat Thani's Muang district. Many people also offered donations to fund the ordination of 140 People's Democratic Reform Committee ex-members at Suan Mokkh Palaram from November 29-30, to make merit for the King's birthday.

Navy rescues wounded oil ship worker in Andaman Sea

PHANG-NGA, 22 Nov 2014 (NNT) – Navy officers managed to rescue a badly-wounded oil ship worker from the Andaman Sea.

The injured, identified as Mr. Pariwan Chuadchum, is the mechanic of the Thai ship named Jao Anoma which was transporting oil from Indonesia to China during the time of accident.

The accident occurred as the ship’s water pump malfunctioned and blew up, causing fractures to hit the man’s costa border. The rescue operation, which had been carried out with difficulty, lasted almost three hours due to high waves and strong winds.

The harsh weather condition prevented the Navy’s helicopter from approaching the ship. The ship's captain thus had to steer as close to the Surin Islands as possible so that the Navy could send a rescue ship to pick up Mr. Pariwan.

The injured was already transported by the Navy’s helicopter to a hospital in Phuket.
