NACC’s panel to probe futsal pitch corruption

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission has set up a panel to look into alleged corruption in the construction of futsal pitches in three northeastern provinces.

Mr Prasart Wongsivapai, one of the commissioners and a member of the panel, said today that initial investigation showed that the Office of Basic Education deliberately set aside 227.5 million baht budget for 2012 fiscal year for the construction of futsal pitches in Nakhon Ratchasima, Muk Dahan and Amnart Charoen provinces as demanded by politicians of those provinces.

Moreover, he said that it was discovered that there appeared to be irregularity in the procurement process as the contractors chosen to build the futsal pitches were connected and the quality of the construction was below standard rendering all the pitches useless.

The former secretary-general of Basic Education Office, directors of regional primary and secondary education offices and directors of schools where there are futsal pitches may face charges if it can be determined that they were involved in the irregularities.

But this is Thailand.........everything's slow......in case they brake the eggs.

I'm here because I had no idea what futsal was. I thought it was a really bad typo. But, now I know. Futsal. Alrighty then.

If only this could become the norm in Thailand (with the guilty doing jail time), this country would quickly turn around.

You might have to get used to this , the same might be said about the Chinese constructed Railway.

Those who cheat and steal from children and the poor, should be sentenced to death and executed with no exceptions.

Hope the "probe" has more depth to it than the pitch covering....

Government funds don't come from the poor and children but rather from those that pay taxes, fees, and fines to the government and from the government itself that must pay interest on funds it borrows. These wasted funds on the futsal contracts could have gone towards better educational resources, scholorships, higher teacher salaries, etc. Aside from criminal convictions of the guilty parties, I hope the government can recover some of the funds stolen from it and the People.

What took so long is a fair question as the NACC has proven itself vigorously independent as afforded by the Constitution. It is not fearful to tread on high profile people. If there's a perceived delay I'd say it was due to a higher priority to complex political investigations concerning conflict of interests and dereliction of duties of previous government administrations. In the case of the futsal scandal the NACC may also have relied more on police investigations to take the lead for the facts that are not so nefarious as found in political investigations.
