sea urchin meat/sashimi anywhere?

Featured Replies

Folks,

Anyone knows where to buy sea urchin meat to be eaten raw sashimi-style? Choice foods does not have one.

I think that the eggs of the sea urchin are used in sushi - not the meat.

You want fresh or frozen?

whatever can be eaten as sashimi. We used to buy NZ sea urchins back in Australia, they were chilled in the shop. Have no idea if there'd been frozen before.

gonads to be precise.

what a trashy little article. Scary sensationalism and almost no useful info. Skip freshwater fish altogether and you'll be fine.

Almost no useful info? Apart from the four ways to avoid dying, you mean?

However, thorough cooking kills the larvae.

There are other ways to eat it raw, but safely, such as by freezing it at 20 degrees Celsius for at least five days, marinading it in vinegar for at least six hours or by marinading it in soy sauce for at least 12 hours.

I last used these about 2 yrs ago, I work in the food industry - they are imported from Korea/Japan or from Italy - they are silly expensive, PM me if you really want em

as far as i know cold water sea urchins gonads were the ones that are eaten. means imported then eaten sashimi (i.e. raw), wouldn't trust it here myself. not sure if tropical ones exist or are edible.
