August 11, 200619 yr Are there any locally available PCI ADSL cards with linux drivers? .. The only 2 brands I've seen online & in the stores here (Planet & Micronet) both are Windows only with no linux drivers available. Do you write that they're Windows-only because they're sold with only Windows drivers, or because you're certain of this? I mean, sometimes PCI cards are sold under many different names and brands, but they are basically the same, using the same chipset (this is certainly true for dial-up modems, I don't have much experience with PCI ADSL modems). If you can look at these cards closely and write down the chip ID, you may find out that this chip is used on a whole bunch of cards and drivers do exist for Linux... --Lannig
August 13, 200619 yr Why do you want to get a relative expensive (at least in Thailand) PCI ADSL device, when you can get a ADSL Ethernet router/modem for the same price? With the introduction of PCIe motherboard I see more and more motherboard who have no PCI interface slots. If you look for cheap, buy a Askey USB ADSL modem, I see yesterday a shop in Panthip selling them for 400 Baht. (4th floor in the left front corner, boxes on the floor) It is no problem to get this 400 Baht Askey USB modem working with most popular Linux Distro's. Want to spent more buy (1300 Baht) at the same shop a D-link 504T router, then you have a 4 port ADSL router with Wi-Fi so you can connect your notebook (or do I now have to say mobile device, as I see more and more telephones with Wi-Fi also)
August 14, 200619 yr Author Don't worry. I'm not a linux newbie , I've been using it for over 10 years I want to convert an older PC into an office router to replace a crappy ADSL router. I need linux to do proper traffic shaping / QOS & IPSEC. Yes I've looked at the chipsets of the Micronet card , it definitely has no linux drivers available. Can't find any info on the planet one.
August 15, 200619 yr Don't worry. I'm not a linux newbie , I've been using it for over 10 years Welcome to the club my first Linux PC was a 486 DX4/100 T.I. notebook, running Slackware 3.0 (that must have been kernel 1.2) ca. 1995. I'm still a big fan of Slackware today, at least for my desktop. I want to convert an older PC into an office router to replace a crappy ADSL router. I need linux to do proper traffic shaping / QOS & IPSEC. Yes I've looked at the chipsets of the Micronet card , it definitely has no linux drivers available. Can't find any info on the planet one. Wouldn't any kind of ADSL connectivity that gives you a network interface (as seen by the kernel) be OK for this? If so, any PPPoE type USB modem would do the trick, it will give you a pppX interface you can work on. Don't know whether finding ones that have drivers for Linux would be much easier though... --Lannig
August 16, 200619 yr To find a USB ADSL modem which works with Linux, you can surf to this URL http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/modems.php?lang=en&modem=all In the list you will see some Dynalink modems with model numbers we know in Thailand as Askey. They are one and the same...... The Askey which you can buy at Panthip for 400Baht works perfectly with thie Eciadsl driver. There are more modems supported by manufacturers directly, see the Billion website for a Billion Bipac-7000 http://www.billion.com and Billion is not the only one who has Linux drivers
August 18, 200619 yr I have the standard 'Allied Telesyn' ADSL USB modem supplied by the 'phone company. I tried to find a driver for Linux but no luck at all. I was quoted 1015 baht for a network modem in Chiang Mai but that seems a lot to pay when I already have a modem which works perfectly with Win 2000, any ideas how to get it to work with Linux?
August 18, 200619 yr Hi Niloc, Can you give some more details of your Allied Telesyn modem like model number and revision date. Also which Linux Distribution you use is helpful.
August 18, 200619 yr Richard, it is an Allied Telesyn ADSL USB Modem,AT-AR206. I am using Ubuntu Version 5.10 I am pretty well resigned to purchasing a modem/routerm there are two us with the same problem so maybe we will get a discount? Off topic but I downloaded the driver for my Laser Shot LBP-1210 printer, supposedly for Linux and the only files which look at all likely are .RPM files, the rest are HTML or .gif files. My Linux seems to know nothing about .RPM files, how can I get at the driver?
