Thai price / Foreigner price

Whilst on a school trip to Korat Zoo I saw a very sad example of how racist and greedy Thai people really are.
We all know about the two tier pricing system in Thailand. Thai price and foreigner price. But Korat Zoo have gone one step further and charge foreign children a higher price than Thai children and they proudly display these charges. PURE GREED AND RACISM !!

  • I think in "most" of these places it's effectively a discounted Resident's Price and Non-Resident's Price. Pretty much the same as happens all over the planet.

That carry-on does get the BP up a bit. Local 'moo krata' restaurant tried to charge the nipper full adult price yesterday simply, I reckon, because they smelt farang blood and were trying it on. Aside from kicking up a stink, only thing you can do is avoid these places or just move out. I am. thumbsup.gif

But Foreigner Children still are Foreigner, I don't understand your statement.

One price Foreigner, one lower price Thai, long time like this.

You could ask for a discount, maybe a Bob Down?

But to make a statement that they are racists because of that, it's out of order.

It's just an attempt to increase their revenues from people that they believe that can afford to pay more.

As I said before, Thais are not racists, but they do envy foreigners earning more money than them and can have a better life.

Wouldn't you?

First of all it is not racist, as it is up to the nationality not the race.

Second it is common around the world......In famous ski areas the locals even pay less for the beer in the restaurants than the tourists.

The adult price for a foreigner at Korat Zoo is 150 baht. This I can tell you is bloody good value, the Zoo is excellent and on top of that there is a fantastic swimming complex. I often spend a day there with my 7 year old daughter. If it's good value I do not worry about two tier pricing.

This subject has been flogged to death. Write a letter to Gen. P.

I've had a bit of a mixed bag with entry fees over the past few weeks.

Thai FIL and I were let in for free on fathers day at a strawberry farm near Buriram. The other Thais in our group had to pay.

Phanom Rung and Muang Tum temples admitted Thai FIL free for fathers day but I had to pay.

Elephant village near Surin who charge an entry fee for foreigners only wanted to charge 100 Baht entrance for my Luk Krung son but eventually relented and allowed him in free.

If anyone not happy with a 2 tier price system....simple don't pay for it....nothing to do with racism...if one travels near and far one would know thailand is not the only country...bah.gif......this has nothing to do with greed if you know what it is.......have you been visiting thai temples, who are the people who make donations for the up-keep of these temples....locals and foreigners visit them but it is mostly thais that give donations.....it is FREE ADMISSION.....

As one says if you can't afford stay at home......don't be such a super cheap charlie...

There are thousands of very wealthy Thais. Some are hugely wealthy. All of them are far more wealthy than the average farang tourist.

Do those wealthy Thais get charged more when going to the zoo here? I doubt it.

Try getting a cab in Malaysia. They'll take every Muslim in the queue before they'll take you.

It's not about race. And certainly has nothing to do with age. It's about tax dollars. Public facilities like the Korat Zoo are paid for with tax dollars. Thai tax dollars. If you're able to show a work permit or sometimes just a non-B, you can pay the Thai rate at those facilities. Usually. Every once in a while you get a ticket vendor that's not familiar with that policy...

Not sure about Zoo's,ect, but if you show a Thai driving licence at national parks, you get the Thai price.

Happens in many other places too. For instance, in Australia, foreign students pay more for higher education than locals.

When I was a foreigner here, I didn't like the practice, but had to accept it. Now that I am a Thai, all I have to do is show my ID card to get the local rate. Double pricing here is therefore not a racist practice, as I'm still a white skinned Caucasian, as before, but I get the local price by virtue of Thai citizenship.

If you can't beat them, join them.

Songkhla Aquarium; I showed my Thai DL and got local price.

Still wasn't worth it!

Tiger zoo or Khao Kiow ?

Not long ago, I jokingly said to the the guard at the entrance of a Thai national park that 'phom bpen khon thai' and he gave me the Thai price along with a big smile. My gf won't stop telling people ... she loved it. I have to admit I was pretty impressed also. Otherwise I try not to take these things too seriously... there are more than enough real problems in the world.

I'm afraid that's very Thai logic you're spouting - discrimination (of any sort) on the basis of race is RACISM..............get it?

Two tier pricing is just plain wrong in any country. In a tourist destination like Thailand, it sends out an unfriendly message and leaves a bad impression.

BS.

Locals living in tourist locations all over the world pay less than tourists. Some mountain villages in Switzerland are only reachable by cable car etc. When I had an address there I got 50% discount on rail fares. And so on. People that complain about this kind of stuff complain about the use of the word Farang.

If you don't like it, just refuse to pay it, plonk your miserly $1.- instead of $5.- on the table and walk on in.

A German visitor came back from watching the last round of Honda LPGA at Siam Country. He was fuming. What happened, I asked, soothing the poor man's distress with a bottle of his favorite Paulaner Weissbier. He said "Our group arrived and everybody paid 500 Baht. When it was my turn, I was waved through. A sign said Free over 60, but I had not even shown any ID. Not paying was the ultimate insult. Racists, the lot of them".

Wish you had told me this when I owned a restaurant in the snow area of Lake Tahoe. Never knew I could charge people not looking like Americans more. That would be racist, because charging an Asian a higher price without knowing if he was an American would be wrong. I never saw it done in the states anywhere, although I am sure you can find some dumps that do it. Oh well....

To be honest the yellow house book is useless now apart from another form of ID. I went to the hospital for a lower back treatment and found out that as I am not from Thailand/ Loas / Cambodia or Myanmar I will still have to pay full charges. No more getting the same as a Thai. Supposedly this honor to farangs holding a yellow house book was taken away as soon as the coup began but was not let known to the farang general populous. I would not have minded if they had fixed my back but they didn't and now after paying the full price I have to travel in as an out-patient.

When you farangs finally understand it: YOU are TOLERATED = NOT wished, but only..NOT kicked out, because of your spending money in TH.

You have only one and one right only: leave as much as possible money in an as short as possible time, gain as less as possible advantage of it, and when your wallet and bank account are empty, kicked out of this racist country.

Imagine, in our western countries we did the same as the Thai do with farangs: the courts would be full of anti-discrimination cases. But in Thailand.. no chance.

So OR accept it OR leave.
