Zigzag lines on Bangkok streets introduced to slow down traffic

10-1-2558-17-32-48-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is now introducing zigzag lines and rumble sticks to slow down traffic in its effort to ensure pedestrians to cross the heavy traffic roads at zebra crossings with more safety.

BMA officials have now painted white zigzag lines on roads around the BMA at the Giant Swing and on Din Sor road and the Asoke Montri road.

Officials said they applied the new safety measures on these roads first because they are where many pedestrians cross the roads, and on several occasions they were hit by running vehicles even though pedestrians crossed the roads in zebra crossing area.

Besides drivers also didn’t notice there is zebra crossing ahead.

BMA official said the zigzag lines were painted 15 metres away from the zebra crossing to warn drivers to slow down their vehicles as they are approaching zebra crossing areas.

Beside the zigzag lines, the BMA also installed rumble sticks in a series of 15 metres along the direction of travel on these roads to warn drivers of a stop or slowdown ahead, or of an approaching danger spot.

BMA’s director for engineering traffic Mr Suthon Arnakul said if the zigzag painting and rumble sticks proved to be successful in slowing down traffic approaching zebra crossing areas, they will be applied on more roads, such as on Srinakarin road.

But he admitted that the rumble sticks might annoy residents living near the road from the rumbling sound of the wheels, and motorists as the audible rumbling transmitted through the wheels could enter the vehicle interior.

Upper Northeast to see temperature drop by 3 to 5 degrees Sunday

BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Department Sunday predicted that the temperature in the upper Northeast would drop by three to five Celsius degrees during the day.

It said the drop of the temperature would be caused by a rather strong high pressure covering upper Thailand and the westerly trough moving across the North and upper Northeast.

The department said the upper Northeast would also be hit by thundershowers with gust during the day.
