Expats in Ubon Ratchathani

Wrong Way on Tha Padaeng (Fridays and Saturday nights are busiest - fairly mundane environment but has pool table and can be fun when full or with the right people in)

N-Joy on Tha Phalochai Road close to its western end (Opens lunchtime so afternoons are worth a punt, but often too quiet; nice bar atmosphere and has good food; pity that no pool table). Ubon Hash days provide a good intro (see below)

TC Kitchen Tha Pitchitrangsan next to Laithong (Slightly Anglo in nature)

Also:

Ubon Hash House Harriers - the drinking club with a running (actually walking mostly!) problem - first Saturday every month - advertised on Isaan forum here

Expats meet-up at Laithong - happens once a month, keep meaning to go - sorry have no details of timing; someone can add

Other falang spots, but restaurants more than bars:

Peppers on Uppalisan opposite entrance to Thia Air Force base. Best range of falang food in Lower Isaan

Outside Inn on Suriyat close to its eastern end. Excellent Mexican food. Affable young (to me) American host

Spagos on Tha Chaengsanit. Best pizzas east of Kantharalak (tongue.png ) and a good range of Italian food and wines

Presumably you have tried some of these and not been satisfied?

Google any of these for better locational info.

  • 1 year later...

Nice thread. Just stumbled across with a google. I know it is a year old. Wondered if any of the posters had updates or the OP can share his experience past year in Ubon? I arrive in a month. Eventually will be commuting to/from Amnat but at least first month or two will spend the week nights there in Ubon. Be good to meet up with some expats in evenings to pass time and couple of beers. BTW is the outdoor free gym going still at that park, Thung Si Muang?

Post #2 is still reasonably accurate, except:

  • TC Kitchen moved from near Laithong to the northeastern corner of Huai Wang Nong (big reservoir at the eastern end of the airport) - now TC Lakeside
  • ME Bar opened as a further expat bar on the main drag Tha Chayangkhun a hundred metres or so north of The Nevada complex and a few hundred metres south of Tesco Lotus
  • A few of us have (on the hash) got to like:
  • Saloon Coffee & Bar on Pichitrangsan 100 metres from its Eastern end; run by young Thais. Daytime drinking of an excellent range of beers and nice relatively cheap falang/thai snack food. Closes (dog knows why!) at 7pm ish
  • Valentines Sports Bar in U-Park entertainment centre north of the junction of Chayangkul with the Ring Road. Thai bar with pool and rather pretty hostess beer servers
  • Angel Bar on Tha Thamawitti close to Thamawitti soi12. Comment as for Valentines except not a sports bar (other than big-screen football favouring Liverpool/ManU) and no pool table
  • The View - inside a soi leading north off the Ring Road 600 metres east of Chayangkul/Ring Road intersection. Thai pub reputedly with nice hostesses (have not sampled myself)
  • Oh Yes! - live band, bar and restaurant, north side of Big C. Expensive beer - I prefer the two karaokes round the corner listed next
  • Several karaokes to wet the appetite if the sap starts rising - Sherbert Bar & Karaoke 100 metres north of the junction of Tha Upparat and Tha Phalochai Rd on Tha Upparat and [two big ones - Thai names (forgotten)] on a corner on soi Chayangkhun 23 behind Big C, both of which are welcoming to falangs.
  • Other non-bar entertainment: Tawaeng Daeng - huge Isaan music hall with Isaan folk music (Morlum-style) and beers/food. Desparately overcrowded on Saturdays; Country Road - smaller version of Tawaeng Daeng; Smile Pub and Restaurant at Tha Srinarong close to junction with Tha Chogkhonittan - live band and decent Thai food; Blues Heaven 200 metres south of Ubonrak hospital on Tha Buraphanai (new, good live rock music 10pm to 12pm, but no customers!

Ubon has no Pattaya style beer bars but three goldfish bowls marked on maps. A couple of walking bar crawls with many of the places mentioned in post # 2 and this post are attached
