New World owner to get demolition bill
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- New World department store belonged to Kaew Phookthuan-thong, who also owned now bankrupt Kaew Fa Plaza Co Ltd. The building was constructed in 1982 as the first department store on Bangkok's Phra Nakhon side. It had a trademark glass elevator that attracted visitors, who enjoyed a food court, an amusement park along with shopping and occasional free concerts.

New World later renovated, building seven other floors on top of its fourth floor. After a long legal battle with the city administration, a Supreme Court verdict ordered that the fifth to eleventh floors be demolished after a closure of the entire building was ordered in 1997 during the tenure of Bangkok governor Bhichit Rattakul.

But the owner refused to cooperate, so the city administration will do the demolition, which is expected to cost Bt10 million - a fee that will later be presented to the owner.

"... presented to the owner."

That doesn't mean that it will be paid by the owner later.

If there is any delay in demolition Kaewfa Shopping Arcade agreed to a daily fine of 1,000 baht. The building was to be demolished by July 2005, so about Bt35 million owed to date.Good luck collecting that as well.

Ah, the wheels of the Thai legal system revolve at a snails pace!

Am I the only one who read this and the only thing I thought about was the fish.

Are the fish going to be saved?

Yes, the fish are being removed (there's a recent thread in News), whether that is 'saving' them is debatable, anything edible will certainly be eaten :(
