No particular reason for posting other than intrigue, but does anyone know whats the story with the new coffee shop on the Canal Road on the left going South just before the Maehia Market traffic lights? Every time I pass by there, there are literally more than fifty cars parked, and because of limited parking, they line up on the side of the Canal Road for what seems like 150 metres before and 150 metres after the place itself. There are always haggles and groups of people heading excitedly it seems towards the place.

It was referred to a couple of weeks ago in another thread, but at that time nobody had a real idea what was going on! Someone thought the place might be owned by a pop star or TV soap actor, or something like that, anyone can provide any clarity?!

Why don't you go in yourself and see what the attraction is?

Because awesome Thaivisa members like Yours Truly exist. wink.png

Anyway, it's called Mao Kafae / Mao Coffee

https://www.facebook.com/maocoffee

Their gimmick is that they serve very good ice coffee in whiskey bottles, which you then mix. So it's 'Drunkard's Coffee' even though I don't think they actually sell anything with alcohol in it. (Not sure actually, my sense of curiosity so far didn't win over my urge to avoid crowds... wink.png )

But the celebrity connection is exactly why iberry (for you Geordies) is famous.

Funny...

About 2 months ago another coffee shop opened in Sansai and I saw the same thing - cars lined up and down the street and people rushing excitedly to get in there. O.K. I was curious so I walked form my place to go and check it out one Saturday morning. Well I was sure disappointed when I got inside there only to find it was nothing more than an ordinary coffee shop that hosted weekly meetings/chat groups for missionaries; both Thai and farang. rolleyes.gif

Is the owner a cop ?

Do housewives drink it and drive to the shops ??

Coffee with booze, what a delightful idea.

Right, though coffee with booze is not what they're selling here.

It does exist of course: Thairish Coffee.

Thanks fellow CM detectives for additional information.....so basically its do it yourself iced coffee....you get the ice in one cup and the coffee in the other then you mix them together to form, well, an iced coffee ! How novel, how innovative !!....and according to someone on the Chiang Mai Eats Facebook page who went yesterday, for this great privilege you wait upto 40 minutes for your coffee !

Think I ll continue to drive by and visit one of the other 59 coffee shops in the same area !! I suppose with about 250 coffee shops around Chiang Mai you have to come up with something "original" to attract lots of customers !

I was wondering what was going on there also as it is a bit of a hazard as cars sometimes have their back end sticking out on the roadway or stopped on the road trying to find a place to park. I assumed it was a new open market.

Off topic, I know but I can't help myself. When Mr K's nan died a few years ago we were in England and helped clear the house. Amongst some incredible things like every electricity, gas and water bills from when they married to ration books and some very old canned food. We found a half bottle of Camp coffee with a really old label on it - an aunty said she remembered it from when they went to a caravan at Crimdon Lido just after Mr K was born, so that made the bottle about 45 years old. There was no mould or anything so for a laugh we made a cup - it was revolting (as Camp coffee is) but hadn't lost any of it's flavour.
