BANGKOK, Jan 28 -- The Ministry of Commerce is sponsoring a Made in Thailand in Focus Fair to bring international buyers to seal business deals with Thai manufacturers.

It hopes the fair will help promote Thai products and that sales at the event should amount to at least Bt300 million.

After opening the fair at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) today, Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said international participants expected to discuss deals at the event. Coming from Southeast Asia -- including Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia -- and further afield including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The positive responses showed the success of the Department of International Trade Promotion in actively promoting Thai products in Southeast Asia which will form a single market and production base after the establishment of the ASEAN Community this year, Ms Apiradi said.

The Thai exports exceeded US$200 billion last year, with one-quarter of that representing export to ASEAN nations.

She hopes the Made in Thailand in Focus fair can significantly help the country raise the value of its export by 4 per cent this year as the Ministry of Commerce has forecast.

The fair should attract at least 20,000 visitors, she said. and sales should reach at least Bt300 million. (MCOT online news)

hahahahaha, wait till they start to fall apart in a few months, buying made in Thailand comes with a lot of catches I have found out, the biggest is the lack of warranty for anything over 7 days. Sourcing the cheapest possible components never works well but it does give them big profits

I'd sooner Thai goods than no name Chinese stuff.

Well it is a good thing the fair didn't last very long. I don't believe they would have done good when people started trying to return their broken products only to find out "refund" is not in their vocabulary.

I'll be going on the next few days.

A lot of the trade shows at BITEC are rather good. Easy to get to at BTS Bang Na station, usually free vans to avoid walking the 500 meters. Bring a business card to save a few minutes filling out forms. Doesn't really need to be your business card, just something to staple to the registration form.

Not had anywhere near the problems with Thai made goods vs. Chinese.

Its funny every product i have bought in Thailand has already broken, They should focus on food exports

Yes the same for me.

Thai don't do any quality control and also their products are not developed/tested properly.

For me "made in Thailand" is a reason to not buy it. It will be broken in a few days even if it's from a real international brandname that stands for quality.

Apart from pirated goods, pad thai, bar girls, lady boys, jet ski and other assorted scams what original invention/product does thailand produce? Rice and elephant poo along with silk is produced in most Asian countries.

You need to get out more.

Went to the "Made in Thailand" fair today and it was quite pleasant.

Not nearly as jam packed as most BITEC trade shows on the days they open to the public. No registration (or money) needed to get in. Lots of fascinating stuff if you're interested in Thai businesses. Most of the stuff is also for sale, some at reduced pricing.

(I found a product I've been looking for for years, but the pretty lady didn't speak English and it's got to be custom made, so I got a business brochure and will have a translator negotiate the local price).

I wouldn't drive up from Pattaya to see it, but heck, it's 300 meters from the BTS at Bang Na.

Ends tomorrow, and coincides with the Half Marathon there Sunday, Feb 01. They had sign-ups for the marathon today, downstairs at BITEC... Quite a few folks signing up. Could be fun.
