I have a friend who publishes software as an add-on for a particular application.

Recently registration codes ended up on a few web sites and he wants to have some sort of on-line activation and ongoing (occasional) verification.

What is around "off the shelf" open source or can be custom coded?

I also have a an application I developed and sell but I use a commercial application for it's protection. Not sure about the safety of an open source version for this type of requirement. It's not cheap but if it forces a couple of purchases that otherwise wouldn't happen then it pays for itself quickly.
