Weather Chiang Rai Braces for Floods as Kok River Levels Rise
Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Residents along the Kok River in Chiang Rai are on high alert as water levels continue to rise, posing a significant flood risk. Authorities have urged communities in areas such as Huai Chomphu, Mae Yao, Doi Hang, Wiang, Rim Kok, and Chiang Rai City Municipality to move belongings to higher ground, with eight temporary shelters set up for those in need. As of yesterday, the Kok River’s level was concerningly high. At the Pho Khun Mengrai Bridge in Mae Yao, the water level reached 6.03 metres, with an increase of 5 to 8 centimetres per hour. At the Kua Phaya Mangrai Bridge near Ban Mai in Rim Kok, levels measured 4.70 metres. Although not at the critical 6.00 metres yet, the trend suggests imminent flooding in low-lying areas. Local families, mindful of past floods, have begun relocating possessions and keeping a vigilant eye on water levels. The city municipality has been proactive, issuing warnings via vehicles and advising at-risk areas like Pa Daeng, Kok Thong, Ko Loi, Fang Min, and Rong Suea Ten to prepare by securing items and staying informed. In coordination with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, alerts have been sent to residents, emphasising the need to safeguard belongings, protect vulnerable groups, and stay updated on the situation. The intense rise has already led to the Kok River overflowing in spots. Particularly affected are Fang Min community, Fang Min Park, key U-turns under T.6 Bridge, and Kok River Bridge (Chiang Rai Highway District 1), where traffic disruptions have occurred due to flooding. Chiang Rai City Mayor Wanchai Chongsutthamanee is actively coordinating response efforts. The municipality has personnel monitoring water levels and pumping water from drainage pipes in the Pa Daeng area to prevent urban flooding. To mitigate the impacts, eight shelters have been prepared, including locations such as Municipal School 1 Si Koet, Municipal School 4 San Pa Ko, Municipal School 5 Den Ha, Municipal School 8 Ban Mai, and three public health service centres. Additional spaces, such as Samakki Witthayakhom School 1 and Wat Chetupon, are on standby if conditions deteriorate. KhaoSod reports that first-aid kits, medical supplies, and support for vulnerable groups are ready for emergencies. Residents can seek assistance around the clock. For immediate assistance, residents can contact: 053-712111 053-712222 053-715952 The response measures reflect the community’s resilience in facing the ongoing challenges posed by the relentless rise of the Kok River. With coordinated efforts from authorities and residents, Chiang Rai remains vigilant and prepared. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-07-30 -

Expat Discontent in Thailand
Because it reminds them that a Scottish King James the V1 of Scotland became King James1 of England in 1603 with the union of the Crowns and that they became British in 1707 with the Union of the Parliaments! -

What Thai cities float your boat?
Which side of the river in Nonthaburi is the wrong side, east or west? I would like to know if our condo is on the right or wrong side! Our condo is on the riverside. Now if the condo admin would only unlock the gate to the pier (a small one) I could sit there and fish. We have a nice view of the city lights. Phra Nangklao Bridge can be seen from the condo. Westgate (I think it's Westgate) can be seen off in the distance.
