Third Army denies searching Yingluck’s car to prevent her from escaping

CHIANG MAI: -- The Third Army today denied press report that its soldiers trailed, stopped and searched the car carrying former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra while she was visiting a temple cemetery to pay respect to her ancestors in Chiang Mai province.

Instead it was just a security protection provided or a former leader of the country, it said

Commander of the Third Army Region Lt-Gen Sathit Pitarat’s statement came as report said soldiers have stopped her convoy at a road checkpoint and conducted search in its effort to prevent her from fleeing the country as she is about to face trial in the Supreme Court next week.

He said it was untrue, adding that the fact was that soldiers at the checkpoint stopped her motorcade and asked to search all of the vehicles, except for Yingluck for security reason.

Her motorcade was allowed to proceed shortly afterwards, he said.

Meanwhile commander of the 33rd Army Area Maj-Gen Sarayut Rangsee also reiterated that a report that soldiers searched her convoy was not true.

In fact, it was her motorcade which passed the checkpoint on the way to the temple and was asked to stop like other vehicles passing the checkpoint.

Soldiers searched only the vehicles of others in the motorcade with the exception of Ms Yingluck’s car as they respected her dignity.

He also dismissed report that soldiers were trailing the former prime minister to prevent her from fleeing the country.

He said it was a security matter for a VIP person, adding if what they have performed their duties would cause her unhappy, he would like to apologize her.

You see, the military have sensitivity training as well. All in the cause of maintaining happiness and particularly Yingluck's.

I enjoyed the imagry of martial law, a German van, stopped at a military check point. Priceless

How come the police never respect my dignity when I drive in Bangkok? Just because you are a former MP does not make you immune to the law or a random search.

Only a simpleton thinks in terms of the color of one's shirt.

Or even any given political party.

Or "Governments" with their Un-Elected PM.

Have some more Kool-Aid.

Will she still get VIP treatment when she is behind bars.

time to hop a visa run buss and wear some graucho marx glasses ( and be ready to pay a load of tea money at the border)

If she is found guilty and sentenced to do time, yes: expect VIP treatment. If you have a name and lots of money, complete with a face that's not too ugly, then you too get get VIP accommodation in a Thai prison. You'll have to wear a prison uniform that conforms to specs, but a top designer could turn that into a fashion statement. Moreover, a ten year sentence can be reduced to three quite easily, of which one might be counted as the home detention while the trial was underway. Of the remaining two, one could be converted to community service. If you overdo the photo ops in six of the remaining months, you may find the other six months of time to be a tad onerous.

I'll send you half my winnings!

No one in the Shin family would ever resort to subterfuge, ever!

To imply such would be an insult to both former prime ministers.

Her brother is not a fugitive, he went to the Beijing olympics just like he said he was. He's still sitting in the stadium now, waiting for the very long intermission to end. laugh.png

Private plane flight from Chang Mai to China?

Why do they need to open disneyworld? They already have it thainess style!

told us what?

Even a lowly conscript should know that Yingluk wasn't escaping. Only 2 vans! Her luggage would never fit.

The HiSo here consider it a status symbol to hire escort vehicles and travel in a motorcade. Usually, it's the police they hire. In fact, anyone can hire them, all you need is money.

I am in favour of inconveniencing them with these checkpoint searches if it dissuades them from it in the future.

I sometimes wonder if there is a word in the Thai dictionary for "subtle"

For someone prepared to comment on things Thai (especially politics), you surely can't be that dumb. But I guess you are. Picking lottery tickets (formal and underground) on the number plate of Yingies' latest car is a popular "sport". It has nothing to do with shirt color, political party, coups or kool aid. I hope you have a nice day today.

What kind of VIP and what dignity?? She's just another woman passing a checkpoint. Of course she's going to be stopped and searched. There's no need to say sorry.

Well, your ignorance meant you missed the point.

Those VW rot dtoos were specially imported for use by senior government officials. Note the illegal tinting.

In Thailand and other countries with highly opaque governments, one has to learn to look for other clues, grasshopper.

I think you're (understandably) forgetting former-PM Somchai, the third member of that talented clan, to have served as PM within a decade ? wai2.gif

Yay for political-dynasties Democracy ! rolleyes.gif

Maybe there was a malfunction on the GPS tracking device...

Soldiers searched only the vehicles of others in the motorcade with the exception of Ms Yingluck’s car as they respected her dignity.

Yingluck = dignity

the others in her company? no dignity...

Remove her passport from her.....how hard is that to do?.... then the highly likely (Dubai escape) problem is solved

Every snide, uninformed comment Costas post's has to do with colors of shirts.

. . . stopped her convoy

Clearly trying to sneak out while keeping a low profile. Honestly, talk about wer!

They should have searched her Van..

I sure it was pilled up with these missing rice bags :)

When the Junta has politically raped the former PM and her party, respect for her dignity seems to carry little credence.
