Myanmar cargo ship catches fire in Ranong

RANONG: -- A major fire broke out Friday on a Myanmar cargo ship as it was on-loading cargo in Ranong province causing damage estimated at more than 15 million baht.

The fire started on a Myanmar registered cargo ship at the Manit pier in Ban Khao Nag Hong located in Ranong municipality.

The firefighters took more than two hours to bring the fire under control but unfortunately all the cargo on the ship was completely destroyed.

The ship arrived at Ranong on the evening of February 12 to take on cargo destined for Koh Song and Myeik provinces and the city of Yangon in Mynaamr.

As the ship was being loaded with the last batch of cargo, the captain started the ship’s engines but the batteries sparked and a huge fire broke out.

The ship’s cargo was made up of furniture, plastics and clothing which allowed the flames to spread rapidly.

The damage is estimated to be in excess of 15 million baht.

Authorities have not been to board the ship to investigate the damage yet as small fires are still lighting up all over the vessel.

The owners of the ship have been contacted and authorities have asked for the ship’s papers and invoices to be handed over to them for investigation.

The ship’s crew, meanwhile, is being held at the Pak Nam Police station in Ranong for questioning.
