BANGKOK: -- A drunk Russian man dressed in a monk’s lungi (just the skirt) was arrested last night for disturbing people with a stick on a street in Chachoengsao province.

The man, only identified as “Vola,” was detained on Bangkwan Road after locals alerted authorities to a man with a stick who seemed violent. He seemed to be drunk and told police he was on the way to see his father in Chonburi.

Vola said he traveled from Moscow to become a monk at the Prong Ar-gat temple in Chachoengsao province three years ago.

Wait, so
If someone busts up a temple, the abbot can tell the police to let him go*
And if a monk busts up some street, the police can tell the abbot tolet the monk go?

Interesting.

* That russian dude that stabbed a cop in the station a couple months back was originally arrested for <deleted> up a temple. He was about to be released at the request of the abbot when he stabbed the cop.

Person my ignorance , but are monks allowed to drink and get drunk ?

So if he is a legit monk then all charges are cleared and he is free...right?

was he a real/dedicated monk? It is not unusual for assorted lowlifes and miss fits to hide behind robes in Thailand for personal gain.

Best way to long stay in Thailand (without money) is to don a robe and shave your head.

The idea is remain anonymous, and off any documentation...also perhaps to get a "mentor". Walking around with sticks in a drunken stupor is certainly not going to keep you "off the radar".

Sean Penn and Rober DeNiro were no angels in that movie "We're no Angels"....portraying the advantages of donning religious robes to escape detection.

The russian was not quite as good at it.

in Thailand, you're talking about a worldwide plague. not all low lifes are pretend monks, some post here talking about them.

Has he been ordained as a monk ? If not he is not a monk, and just pretending to be. Years ago the government used to come down on this pretty heavy, but there seem to be "monk scams" going on now all the time, particularly with these so-called Vietnamese "monks" collecting donations. There is actually a section in the penal code regarding pretending to be a Buddhist monk, and they used to use it with force 20 years ago. These days officials probably say "no money in it for me, no can care", bit like No Money No Honey. thumbsup.gif

Drunken, violent Russian a monk? Sounds about par for the course here.
