RAYONG: -- Rayong fishermen and beachside vendors yesterday urged to the government to help clear up an oil slick and garbage from the Mae Rampeung Beach in Muang district.

The 30-strong group from this eastern province filed the petition via a government-run Dhamrongtham complaint gathering branch at Rayong City Hall. Vendor Nichamon Khongcharoen, 58, urged the related agencies - the Natural Resource and Environment Ministry, the Marine Department and the Pollution Control Department - to solve this issue for the sake of the fishing as well as the tourism industries.

While I do agree it should be cleaned up for the sake of Thailand, I see no reason to do anything for the sake of the fishermen. Half the stuff that washes up on Thailands more famous tourist beaches is stuff dumped from fishing boats. Combined the fishing industry pollutes the beaches and the sea more than any oil spill ever has.

The rubbish is from the fishing boats themselves (you should see the amount of arc lamps that get washed ashore from squid fishing), what comes down in the rivers from farmers etc and what the weekend Bangkok crowds throw away. Both Ban Phe and Taphong councils have blue rubbish bins the length of the beach which get emptied regularly but despite this people can't walk a few metres to dispose of their rubbish or to put it in the bins as they return to their vehicles. The beach vendors themselves clean the area around their pitches to the upper tide line so below that it's full of rubbish and it's better the Taphong end of the beach as the council does pay for cleaners and also sometimes companies like IRPC or PTT ( for purely altruistic reasons ........) sponsor clean-ups and will give some of their workers the day off to come and clean the beach.

If you want to go swimming stay away from this beach at the moment as there is crude oil in the water, go a bit further East to Laem Mae Phim or the beaches around the novotel which tend to be much cleaner with less people and are nicer beaches anyway.

What a bunch of hypocrites!

All those big bags are dumped by the fishermen as ballast.

Agreed! But not as hypocritical as the government. Forcing all the sunbathers to risk cancer in Phuket because they say parasols destroy the beaches, all of the bars on the beach that kept the beaches clean at Layan....n Yet the government does NOTHING about this kind of stuf
