This video was taken at a pre season friendly at Stalybridge Celtic. It was one of my best days out in years and, I suspect the reason FC's support goes from strength to strength.

The ball goes into the crowd, someone catches it, thats me that is. Sign him up, was the crowd's shout behind me. LOL.

The Manifesto: Who We Are and What We Mean

FC United of Manchester is a new football club founded by disaffected and disenfranchised Manchester United supporters. Our aim is to create a sustainable club for the long term which is owned and democratically run by its members, which is accessible to all the communities of Manchester and one in which they can participate fully.

Although driven by very different circumstances, FC United of Manchester takes as its inspiration a number of supporters' groups who have gone down this route, including AFC Wimbledon, who have offered unstinting support.

FC United of Manchester is intended to create a football club which addresses the concerns which many Manchester United fans have had over the last decade or more with how the club and football have developed, culminating in the club's takeover by Malcolm Glazer. We will follow the best traditions of Manchester United's past by developing policies which encourage youth participation in terms of both playing and supporting.

FC United of Manchester will be formed as a member-owned, democratic, and non-profit making entity on the Industrial and Provident Society company model. The EGM will focus on the election of a board of directors by the members, and the direction of the club over the coming season.

We have ambitious and long term plans. Above all we want to be seen as a good example of how a club can be run in the interests of its members and be of benefit to its local communities. However, we are a new club and will require patience in order to reach our goals. With the help of all our members and supporters we are confident we can achieve them.

Seven core principles of how the club will operate are set out below, and once agreed by the membership, will be protected by all elected Board members:

1. The Board will be democratically elected by its members.

2. Decisions taken by the membership will be decided on a one member, one vote basis.

3. The club will develop strong links with the local community and strive to be accessible to all, discriminating against none.

4. The club will endeavour to make admission prices as affordable as possible, to as wide a constituency as possible.

5. The club will encourage young, local participation - playing and supporting - whenever possible.

6. The Board will strive wherever possible to avoid outright commercialism.

7. The club will remain a non-profit organisation.

Couldn't resist taking a peep at what this link would be about. And hey presto for once Nev and i agree on something (a principle - "but for me one love..."). I can understand the idea behind those reds making a stand against the yanks and all, but to disown the club you've loved all your life...or are they just the glory hunter types we hear about at successful clubs - sorry but i just can't understand how they could do that. I suppose though if i woke up tomorrow to read my lot were merging with your lot, well then my allegiance might be tested. :o

They want more fan-owned clubs.

The Telegraph:

Uefa have called on the Government to investigate the mystery money-men targeting English clubs.

West Ham are the latest team to be the subject of takeover speculation, with Kia Joorabchian, the Iranian-born businessman behind the sensational signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, vowing to put together a consortium of backers to make a bid for control at Upton Park.

Although West Ham announced they were in "exploratory" talks with a possible bidder on Friday, Joorabchian continues to insist he is not ready to make a move to buy the club.

Over the weekend it emerged that Joorabchian is talking to potential investors in the Middle East about raising the funds for a possible bid.

But the lack of transparency is causing concerns at West Ham and among football's authorities who have seen a number of anonymous wealthy foreign investors buying into clubs across Europe.

Their sudden move into the game has raised fears that they are operating as a cartel and distorting European competition and the transfer market.

Fifa are already working on a new set of rules which will require all clubs to disclose who they are really owned by. And now European football's governing body, Uefa, want the British Government to step in to ensure ownership of clubs is completely open.

Uefa's director of communications William Gaillard said: "We certainly are concerned by what is going on because it seems to be following a worrying pattern.

"The trend is going against what we want to see — more clubs being owned by the community and the people who really care for them.

"This is a wake-up call and the UK Government have a responsibility to start investigating. After all it's a part of the UK economy."

A mighty fine nine out of nine;

A first half Stuart Rudd hatrick and a double from Josh Howard helped make it nine victories out of nine for FC United with a comprehensive 7-1 victory over Gorton based Abbey Hey.

Howard got the scoring underway early on with a lob and Rob Nugent doubled the lead heading home a corner. The visitors then got one back, but it was to be their only goal of the night as Rudd hammered home a hatrick before the interval to put the game beyond any doubt.

The second half was less eventful as a number of substitutes were made, but Howard made it six by grabbing his second late on and there was enough time for an own goal to make it 7-1.

FC United and northerncare score a hit for Young People;

The Match sponsors this Saturday are the children’s residential care providers, northerncare. northerncare were part of the original group of 127 Club members last season. This season, not only did the company join the 127, they also teamed up with FC United to offer free match attendance to all young people in care in Greater Manchester and their carers.

It was a groundbreaking agreement, and we have had enquiries about the scheme from all over the region, from football staff linked with Port Vale FC, and care managers as far away as Devon and Southwark.

The scheme has been reported on the websites of the British Association of Social Workers, the National Children’s Bureau and the North West Counties League. An article has appeared in the magazine of the National Centre for Excellence in Residential Child Care, and articles are going in Fostercare magazine and Tameside’s Teenzone magazine. We also have the backing of the Who Care Trust and A National Voice for Young People in Care and Leaving Care.

northerncare Marketing Manager, Karen O’Leary, told the FC website: “A number of our young people have attended games and already said they want to become regular match goers.”

Both club and company are keen, not only to encourage young people enjoying the big match atmosphere provided at FC United, but also to engage in other activities with the club. Hence some young people with northerncare have already attended matches as ballboys and girls.

In addition, for over 40 young people in care, the football will start early this Saturday. The morning will see them kicking off a tournament in partnership with FC United and northerncare. The 5-a-side event takes place at the JJB Soccerdome at the Trafford Centre, and involves seven teams take each other on before making the trip to watch FC United play Silsden at Gigg Lane.

The tournament follows a successful morning at Blackpool last weekend, when over 20 of the players involved in the tournament took part in two hours of coaching delivered by our Club Development Officer, John Thomason. The players, recruited from care homes across the North West, practiced a number of skills and team-play. They were hoping that the extra preparation would put them in good stead ahead of this weekend.

"There was some really good football on display at Blackpool" commented John. "With a trophy to play for on Saturday, I’m sure we’ll see a high-standard, and maybe some future stars."

The Silsden fixture is an “Under 18s Go Free” game so the afternoon will see them in good company. All young people attending are invited to participate in our “Sketch the Game” competition.

Saturday 16th September vs Silsden Kick Off 3pm Gigg Lane

FC Triumph in 5 Goal Thriller

By FCUoM

Newcastle Town 2 - 3 FCUoM

A last minute winner from Simon Carden sealed victory for the reds in a five-goal thriller against a skilful Newcastle Town side before a Lyme Valley Stadium record crowd of 1,833 supporters.

Carden’s coolly taken volley sealed an amazing comeback for United who found themselves not only trailing 2-1 just after the hour mark, but also with striker Rory Patterson being forced to go in goal for the injured Sam Ashton.

In the end, hard work, determination and committed, attacking football snatched all three points for Margy's men, sending the travelling masses in to euphoria on the terraces.

Midfielder Steve Spencer broke the deadlock half an hour into the game when he followed up a Patterson shot which had been parried by the home side’s goalkeeper Richard Froggatt.

Patterson latched on to a knock on by Stuart Rudd and was unfortunate not to get himself on the score sheet with a shot from just in side the 18-yard box, but it didn’t matter because Spencer was on hand to make it count.

Newcastle's top scorer and former Aston Villa trainee Dave Berks grabbed an equaliser five minutes before the break.

And then with the home side enjoying some possession, his strike partner, Nick Wellecomme, gave Town the lead just after the hour mark.

Castle had a sustained amount of pressure in the build up with the reds failing to clear their lines before Wellecomme got on the end of a cross from the left wing.

Whilst scoring, Wellecomme collided with Ashton who had raced off his line in a bid to close him down.

The young United ‘keeper definitely came out of incident the worse of the two because he had to be helped to hobble off the pitch and could take no further part in the game.

Nick Platt was thrown into the action to replace Ashton with captain Patterson donning the ‘keeper’s jersey and gloves for the last half hour.

At this point things were not looking too good for the league leaders, but manager Karl Marginson took the opportunity provided by the break in play due to Ashton's injury to rally his team with an on field team talk.

Whatever, Margy said certainly worked because the Reds pulled together and Carden grabbed two priceless goals.

The first came with 15 minutes to go when Alex Mortimer curled in a free kick from the right wing, Rob Nugent was perfectly placed at the back post to nod the ball down across goal and Carden reacted quickest to slot it home from two yards out.

If the FC United faithful were pleased with the equaliser, they had just 15 more minutes to wait before the day turned out to be one of the best trips they’ve ever been on.

With the reds piling the pressuring on, Castle began to panic at the back and conceded a number of corners and throw-ins.

Then, with just seconds remaining, Rudd went over to the left wing to take a long throw-in into a crowded penalty area.

The ball was headed on by a defender and Carden volleyed the winner into the top right corner.

All that was left was for Margy and his team to celebrate and exchange mutual appreciation with the army of supporters before they all got to go home.

FCUoM 8 - 0 Squire's Gate

PERHAPS the only result in doubt during today's game would be who would take home the matchball - four-goal hero Rory Patterson or strike partner Stuart Rudd, who himself netted a hat-trick before debutante Danny Shannon rounded things off.

Going one better than Simon Carden's sixth-minute opener on Wednesday night, it took Patterson just five minutes to put the reds ahead against a team who had already shopped 29 goals in 12 previous league games.

Not to be outdone, Rudd joined the Irishman on the scoresheet 10 minutes later before Patterson made it three just before the half-hour mark.

And wrapping up a satisfactory opening half, Patterson added another two goals before the break to take his season tally to 14.

With the match settled at 5-0 by the time the second half got underway, winger Jamie Pheonix got a run out before Nick Platt made his second appearance from the bench in a week and Shannon also came on to make his first appearance for FC.

To Squires Gate's credit, they did come out with some attacking force after the break, but looked vulnerable at the back, with Patterson and Rudd being denied one-on-ones due by the linesman's flag on several occasions.

Rudd got his second goal of the game on 48 minutes after he latched onto a bread-and-butter through ball and finished cooly past visiting 'keeper Peter Summerfield.

Squires Gate went a further 31 minutes without conceded again, and themselves tested Sam Ashton with two shots blazing across goal, but just wide of the mark.

And when United's seventh goal did arrive, the 3,278 spectators inside Gigg Lane were a little perplexed - none more so than Summerfield himself.

An injury to Patterson made the referee stop the game and when the Squires Gate stopper threw the ball down the re-start play, Rudd gained control and calmly walked into the net.

But as far as outright skill is concerned, the second-half highlight came with just four minutes left on the clock when Rhodri Giggs brought an impressive cross-field ball under control and produced a stunning cross to pick out Shannon, who headed in powerfully for 8-0.

Interesting article on FC United from The Guardian...:

FC United rise and shine on a sense of community

The club born out of mass discontent at the Glazer takoever is winning titles and putting down roots

FC United of Manchester, formed by fans opposed to Malcolm Glazer's takeover at Old Trafford, have travelled a joyfully long way from mere rebellion. At Gigg Lane, a week before "Big" United were confirmed as Premiership champions, FC fans stood and sang throughout a 5-0 demolition of Formby, completing their own second season of record-breaking, championship-winning promotion.

In gorgeous weather surely never previously witnessed in April in Bury, in the raucous section of the Main Stand and the packed Manchester Road End, the fans belted out Sloop John B, customised as their season's anthem: "I wanna go home/I wanna go ho-o-ome/This is the worst trip/I've ever been on."

There is a depth to this commitment which quite unexpectedly caught me by the throat, got me in the eyes. FC United may have started in protest at the heart-sinking economics which devoured Manchester United but it is powered by the fans' heartfelt attachment to football and the collective belonging they feel it represents. The relationship with "Big" United is complex; most FC fans still support the club - packing the pubs and Gigg Lane social club to roar United on to the 4-2 win at Everton before FC's game last week - but they grew alienated, over time, from the business which is Manchester United.

Mike Turton, 44, an electricians' supervisor, who was at the Formby match with his daughter Danielle and sons, Ryan and Thomas, is a typical FC founding father. An Old Trafford regular for 31 years, he packed in on May 12 2005 - they can all recite the date - when the Glazers, from their Florida base, finally acquired United with their £810m hedge fund-leveraged deal.

"I didn't leave because of the takeover," he said. "That was just the final push I needed to get out. It started in the Nineties; winning trophies was very nice but I didn't support United to win trophies. I'd stopped enjoying it. The prices were rising and I started wondering why I was forking out to fund the players' ridiculous wages.

"I love what we've built here, I'm really proud of it. I like to think it's in the best Manchester tradition of protest, along the lines of the suffragettes and the Trades Union movement, which have their roots here."

You hear this Manc pride a lot as well as bemusement that fans of other clubs have not protested against their takeovers - "Not even Liverpool," the FC fans all murmur. Here they have moved on, to building their own club according to the principles they argued for when campaigning: supporter-ownership, with members (2,500 of them) voting for the board and policies; ticket prices affordable at £7 for adults, £2 for under...#8209;16s, and an agreement with stewards that supporters can stand. The club has established a youth policy which seeks to work with junior clubs who often feel exploited by the way professional clubs' academies trawl for the best players. FCUM have also made partnerships with social welfare and community organisations, seeking to welcome marginalised groups and introduce football as a good presence in their lives.

Andy Walsh, the former Militant firebrand and leader of the United fans' anti...#8209;Murdoch and anti-Glazer campaigns, has been reinvented here into FC United's general manager, all trim in a blue check suit and club tie, directing details on his walkie-talkie - stewards, tickets, match day volunteers.

"Most people here still love United," Walsh said, "but they love their feeling for United, which grew from following the club for years, not the big business which came to exploit that loyalty. We're aiming to show a football club can be run by and for supporters, open to all sections of society."

The Formby match was designated a youth day, with under-16s allowed in free and young people before the game taking part in drama, banner-making and working with the Touch of Class rap collective, which promotes an anti-gun message. Thomas Cullen, a coach at Trafford Athletic Club, brought a group; he said he believed one lad had just been saved from being excluded by his school. "His teacher is here and she saw a different side of him," he said. "This is great for them. They're mostly black lads from Hulme and Moss Side but not one has ever been to a match at Old Trafford because they can't afford it."

Bill Evans, manager of Rochdale Children's Rights and Advocacy Services, brought 30 children, all in local authority care, saying it was a "positive way for them to feel included". Maxine Seager of the Tameside Youth Service, a disaffected "Big" United fan herself, came with 70 kids - "Two coach loads," she said, grinning and rolling her eyes.

"They're loving it, buzzing. They get so much out of this and we work our programmes, on anti-racism and social cohesion, around coming to the game."

The youth day events were organised by Vinny Thompson, who seemed staggered by his own football conversion: "To go from parading on terraces all over Europe to being a lentil...#8209;eating social worker in two years is pretty bloody amazing."

The thirty- and fortysomething Stretford End veterans who formed FC United are painfully aware that Premiership ticket hikes have largely priced out the next generation of fans, so are replenishing their own ranks with the regular £2 entry price and this youth day. The place was teeming with kids, a sight long disappeared from top-flight football. One group of eight, aged 11 to 14, marching along with classic red, white and black scarves around their necks and not an adult in sight, seemed like a Life On Mars throwback to the 1970s. One eloquently explained why they come: "The atmosphere's mint."

The 3,847 who made it to the Formby game may not represent the dent in the Glazers' business plan some hoped for but it is many more than Bury had at their last home game, a phenomenon at the base of football's pyramid. The five goals strolled in took FC's total this season to 157 and a finish on 112 points; both are records. After the game the North West Counties League title was presented to Dave Chadwick, FC's mountainous captain, Walsh discreetly handing out the champagne. Beaming, bowing to shake hands with crowds of kids at the Manchester Road End, the players looked disbelieving, that tough semi-pro careers have turned out this glorious.

Karl Marginson, the former Rother-ham United and non-league striker who has proved the perfect manager, said he has understood FC's philosophy more with time. "It's a very special thing to be part of. I try to instil its importance in the players, that this is the fans' club."

In the celebrating stands they were mixing fond player ditties, anti-Glazer chants and pro-FC compositions. To the tune of Anarchy in the UK they roared: "I am an FC fan/I am Mancunian."

This is a football club they have fashioned for themselves out of belief and conviction. While Big United chase the Double at Wembley, they are off to the UniBond Northern Premier League next season. It seems like the best trip they have ever been on.

How long before they'll be playing Rochdale Red ?

Who's Rochdale Red??

I was reading recently about FCUM & their proposal to move back into the Manchester area. Apparently the cost of hiring Bury's ground & the staff involved is causing severe finacial worries. They say crowds have levelled out to around the 2,500 mark each game after the initial euphoria & land has been targeted for their own ground, trainging pitches & social club.....I hope they pull it off.
