Match Report

Former FC United favourite Rory Patterson came back to haunt the Reds as Bradford Park Avenue’s summer signing scored both goals in a comprehensive 2-0 victory at the Horsfall Stadium.

An early screamer and a supremely taken second half goal from ‘The Man Formerly Known As The Man With No Name’ gave the home side all three points and take them into the top three of the UniBond Premier Division.

And to cap off a miserable Monday night against West Yorkshire’s money men, the Reds also had Chris Baguley sent off as the match reached an ill tempered finale.

Yet things had started off brightly for the Reds with Carlos Roca and Kyle Wilson carving out half-chances after good work down the right hand channels.

But it was Bradford who took the lead with a quarter of an hour gone. A short tap from a free-kick just outside the area allowed Patterson to pull the trigger and hit a thunderous shot into Ashton’s bottom right corner.

With another former United favourite Stuart Rudd working well alongside the impressive Chris Hall the Bradford frontline always had options and stretched the Reds defence throughout.

At the other end Wilson looked an increasingly lonely figure up front and a long range Chris Baguley free-kick was as close as the Reds came to an equalizer. United were fortunate not to go into the break two down after the linesman ruled out a rare Patterson header.

The game could have turned back in the Reds favour as early as the first minute of the second half though. Facing away from goal, Wilson was upended on the edge of the box but the striker’s very vocal protests for a penalty went unheard.

Dogged defending from David Chadwick continually kept the Reds in the game but there was little that ‘captain marvel’ could do to stop Bradford’s second goal. A clear break saw Patterson one-on-one with Ashton and the keeper could only watch on helplessly as the Irishman curled his finish into the corner.

Margy’s string of substitutions failed to ignite the Reds’ challenge and as tempers frayed the match descended into farce in the final minutes.

Following a scuffle in the middle of the park the referee made a complete meal of trying to clear up the mess. In the end Chris Baguley proved to be the unlucky scapegoat and the FC United faithful could only look on perplexed as he received his marching orders.

Match Report

FC United came out on the wrong end of a seven goal thriller at Prescot Cables on Tuesday night despite mounting a brave fight back.

Kyle Wilson struck twice and substitute Chris Baguley got the other as the Reds clawed their way back onto level terms with 10 minutes to go after finding themselves 3-1 down.

However, after doing all the hard work the Reds were caught with a sucker punch and Karl Connelly was allowed to seal victory on the break with seven minutes remaining.

There was still time for Wilson to agonisingly hit the cross bar in the dying seconds to leave Margy’s men feeling aggrieved to come away from Hope Street empty handed.

On a night when the frontmen dominated defences on both sides, United could have taken the lead after half an hour from an in swinging corner but captain David Chadwick’s header rattled the crossbar.

Instead the Reds were forced to chase the game after Prescot snuck into the lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a quality strike from Karl O’Donnell.

To make matters worse United found themselves 2-0 down 12 minutes after the restart. Having failed to clear their lines from a Cables corner, striker Liam Kennedy had time to hit home from inside the area.

And Prescot could have wrapped the game up moments later if it wasn’t for a fantastic save from Sam Ashton on the edge of the box.

A triple substitution on the hour mark saw Margy implement a more attacking formation and adding more creativity in midfield. No more than 10 minutes later, the manager reaped the reward as Wilson latched onto a long-range free kick to calmly knock the ball over the Prescot keeper.

The Amber and Blacks soon reinstated their two goal advantage though as the Reds were undone by a defence splitting long ball with Eammon Price calmly slotting the ball under the advancing Ashton.

United again pulled a goal back to stay in contention. Chris Baguley’s expert free kick on the edge of the area did just enough to creep under the Cables keeper at the near post with 13 minutes to go.

Wingmen Jerome Wright and Adam Carden always looked lively and with their tails up the Reds searched for a deserved equaliser. Wilson soon obliged from the penalty spot to claim his second of the night and ensure United took the Cables to the wire.

But optimism soon turned to despair at Hope Street. As the visiting defence pushed forward in search of a winner, Prescot substitute Karl Connolly was allowed to run onto an expert long ball and claim the winning goal.

The Reds must now pick themselves up for the first qualifying round of the FA Cup this Saturday at Nantwich Town.

Match Report

FC United’s dreams of a FA cup run were left in tatters as they went down 4-3 to Nantwich Town in the first qualifying round replay at Gigg Lane on Wednesday evening.

A Dave Walker hat-trick dumped the Reds out of the cup but controversial refereeing decisions left the United faithful feeling hard done by.

The original encounter on Saturday was a tight, tactical affair but the replay had all the drama and excitement of an old-fashioned cup tie. The crowd were treated to end-to-end football, a late comeback and much, much more.

The two teams were fairly even in the first half and the only thing that separated them was a goal from Dabbers striker Dave Walker after eight minutes which gave the away team a slight advantage at the interval.

But the first half wasn’t all doom and gloom, United looked strong at the back and were knocking the ball around well. The only real chances of note came when Adam Carden was one-on-one and his shot was saved before the rebound was tamely struck at goal by Kyle Wilson.

Not long before the break Danny Williams had a good opportunity but the young midfielder seemed to want to put the ball on his right rather than the left footed attempt he managed to get off.

All was to play for going into the second session but within four minutes what was a good situation turned horrible wrong as the Reds found themselves three goals down.

The first of these goals came about after an extremely controversial decision. Walker was played through and slotted home but it looked as though the effort would be ruled out by the referee’s assistant who signalled for offside long before the ball was in the back of the net.

However, when referee Bankes consulted his assistant he seemed to overrule his decision and gave the goal to the Dabbers, thus ensuring he’ll finish last in any popularity contests at Gigg Lane and wiping himself from all Christmas card lists.

Just moments later the margin was three goals when defender Charlie O’Laughlin seemed to rise unmarked from a corner and headed home.

Three goals down and feeling they’d been dealt a cruel hand by more than fate it would have been easy for the home team to drop their heads and slip to defeat. But that is simply not the United way and so the Reds came forward looking for a way back into the game.

That breakthrough came when Wilson’s free-kick had it’s sting taken out of it by the wall but the ball fell kindly to Simon Carden who slotted home to close the gap to two, with more than 30 minutes remaining.

But those hopes of a comeback were dealt another blow when Adam Carden was adjudged to have brought down substitute Phil Parkinson in the box and a penalty was awarded.

After his effort was saved by Sam Ashton on Saturday; Danny Griggs was relieved of his spot kick duties and instead it was Walker who struck the ball powerfully past Ashton to put the Dabbers 4-1 up.

United made changes adding Danny Self to half-time substitute Carlos Roca and came forward strongly. And it turned out to be an inspired change as Self finished off a solo run with a lovely finish to make it 4-2.

The next 15 minutes became frustrating for United, as the Dabbers looked to waste time at all opportunities and chances became few and far between. Rob Nugent was brought on for his first appearance of the season and captain David Chadwick was put up front, with the idea of the long ball being played up to the powerful header.

It was on such ball in the 89th minute that was flicked on by Chadwick and saw Wilson slot home for his ninth of the season and put United within one goal of an amazing comeback.

The four added minutes seemed to last an eternity, as the United faithful willed their team on but there was no breakthrough to be had and United found themselves out of the world’s oldest club competition at the first qualifying stage for the second successive season.

It’s fair to say United’s fans let the referee know their feeling as he made his way from the pitch but the team left with their heads held high knowing that their second half performance showed the Untied ethos and never say die attitude that brought the club together.

Margy’s men will be looking to put the disappointment to one side and get their league form on track when they meet Worksop Town at Gigg Lane this coming Saturday.

Match Report

FC United sealed an impressive 4-0 victory away to Ossett Town on Tuesday night with two goals each for Carlos Roca and Kyle Wilson.

Much of the pre-match talk had been about FC United’s run of five games without a win but the manner of the victory goes a long way to show that the Reds are a much better team than the current league position suggests.

Things got underway and the visitors welcomed back Chris Baguley into the centre midfield and it wasn’t long before United were creating chances.

A touch of good fortune gave the Reds the lead as Roca gained possession on the edge of the box and hit a rather tame effort goalwards. The ball took a deflection off a defender which changed the direction of the ball and all that Ossett ‘keeper Lee Cockerham could do was watch the ball trickle into his bottom corner.

Some people may describe the strike on the 10 minute mark as an own-goal but Roca will be keen to claim it as his long awaited first for the club since signing during pre-season from Altrincham.

With United 1-0 they continued to press forward with a their trademark wing play giving the home team problems. The Ossett defence seemed to struggle with the pace of Roca, Jerome Wright and Adam Carden as well as the sheer brute force of Kyle Wilson.

It was the league’s top scorer who doubled the lead just after half an hour. United had been under a spell of pressure as Ossett tried to get back into the game but when they broke from the corner Simon Garner’s through ball split the opposition defence in two and left Wilson one-on-one with Cockerham. Wilson made no mistake - coolly slotting home for his 10th of the season.

United could have been three up before the interval but Roca saw his effort ruled out for offside after Adam Carden put the ball across the box from the right.

The second half carried on much in the same vein as the first with both teams enjoying good possession but only United looking like they could score.

FC United again enjoyed good openings down the wings and came close when an Adam Carden challenge surprisingly headed for the goal but he was denied by a good re-actionable stop.

The third goal wasn’t long in coming though. When a innocuous ball over the top released Roca, the forward took his chance with a superbly taken right footed strike into the top corner to give Untied a three goal cushion.

Just minutes later the Reds were awarded a penalty after Wilson picked the ball up around half way and charged at the home defence like a bull, after beating a few defenders he was stopped in the box but at the cost of a penalty.

Roca sensed his hat-trick but his pleas for the spot kick fell on deaf ears as Wilson picked the ball up, placed it on the spot and fired home to give United a real confidence boosting victory.

Rob Nugent continued to gain match fitness by getting 10 minutes at the end, coming on for captain David Chadwick and it looks like it won’t be long before the duo are reunited in the centre of defence.

FC United showed real moments of class on the evening and the play coming forward was one area in particular that would have pleased Karl Marginson and the United faithful.

The game also represented the third clean sheet in four games for the United defence since the signings of full backs Simon Garner and Danny Warrender, and a strong defensive unit is always a good basis to build upon.

The only sour note for United is that they must now wait almost two weeks until the next fixture at home to Witton Albion. Due to this they will have hope that they can keep the momentum from this performance going until a week on Saturday.

Kyle Wilson’s 20th goal of the season with six minutes to go looked to have sealed an impressive win for the Reds but Anthony Lloyd smashed home a stunning 25-yard screamer in stoppage time to grab a hard earned draw for the Lions.

James Hanson had put the West Yorkshire side ahead after just six minutes but United responded less than ten minutes later when Chris Baguley turned in a Wilson cross from closs range.

The scoreline stayed evenly poised at one-one for the next 70 minutes of play as an engrossing, end-to-end encounter unfolded at Nethermoor Park with great chances for both teams.

However, as the game wore on, United were looking the stronger side despite being nine places and 11 points behind the home team in the UniBond Premier Division table. The best opportunities fell to the Reds and had Lloyd not scored surely the finest goal of his career, all the points would have been travelling back over the Pennines to Manchester.

Match Report

Victory was snatched away from FC United in the dying seconds at high flying Guiseley as an enthralling encounter finished in a two all draw on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,283 supporters.

The match kicked off following a well-respected minute’s applause for one of Guiseley’s most treasured volunteers, Gladys Clapham, who passed away earlier in the week. It was the home side who were out of the blocks fastest.

Striker Steve Burton had the first chance of the match after just three minutes when he tried his luck from distance. Sam Ashton was back-pedalling but looked to have the 40-yard strike covered as it sailed just over the bar.

Minutes later and it was once again Burton who was troubling the United defence. The former Ipswich Town trainee latched onto a through ball down the right and evaded a challenge from Simon Garner.

Adam Turner came over to prevent Burton from crossing the ball into the box for Hanson, so seeing this the forward elected to try his luck for goal instead. His powerful shot cannoned off the upright and flew back across goal to a grateful Hanson who reacted quickly to head the ball home.

With the almost obligatory early goal conceded, United began to settle. Baguley, partnering Wilson upfront, had the Reds’ first chance after 13 minutes. Danny Warrender surged up the right wing and cut inside before laying the ball off for Baguley who shot from the edge of the box. However, his effort into the bottom right hand corner was comfortably saved.

Two minutes later Baguley got the equaliser. Simon Carden won the ball in midfield and pushed it on towards Baguley who had his back to goal around the halfway line. The former Oldham Athletic midfielder took the ball on his chest and then hooked a superb ball out to the left wing for Wilson to run onto.

Wilson used his pace and power to maraud past the full back and into the edge of the box. The Lions keeper, Piotr Skiba had to come over to close the angle and when he did it allowed the league’s top scorer to turn provider for Baguley who had raced over to the far post where he turned the ball over the line. Game on.

Six minutes later and United could have taken the lead. Garner was getting in on the act and he took two defenders on down the left before crossing to the near post for Simon Carden who dived in under pressure but could only steer the ball wide.

At the other end, the Lions showed they would take some taming. Mark Whitehouse was proving to be a handful down the left wing and after getting the better of Warrender midway through the first half he whipped a dangerous ball into the box for Burton to attack. However, captain David Chadwick was putting in another immense performance and scooped the ball off the striker’s toes.

Wilson was coming into the game more and more as the half wore on and he could easily have had two before the break. First on the half hour mark the big striker dummied a pass from Adam Carden and Baguley was on hand to lay it into the box for him. However, Wilson scuffed his shot and it was easily saved.

Minutes later he floated a teasing cross into the box and Chaddy, still up from a partial cleared corner, glanced his header just over the bar. Wilson then combined well with Baguley again on the edge of the box before getting a better shot away. However, Guiseley’s big Polish keeper was equal to it in his rather fetching purple jersey and that was the last action of the first 45 minutes.

United started the second half how the hosts had started the first – in earnest. Warrender hit a superb diagonal ball through to Baguley who through one-on-one with the onrushing Skiba. Baguley tried to chip the keeper but he the attempt was smothered.

Despite United looking the more dangerous of the two sides, Guiseley were still posed a very real threat. A free-kick from the halfway line was nodded down by the towering youngster Hanson and Alex Callery really should have done better than slice his effort wide.

The game really swung in United’s favour with 12 minutes to go when Wednesday night’s hero Nick Robinson was introduced for Papis Dietye, who had put in an impressive performance for his first start.

As the Guiseley back four continued to defend high up the field, Robinson was the next player to find himself clean through one-on-one. The visibly pumped up substitute raced through with his first touch of the match and shot with his second. With Skiba having no chance, Robinson somehow managed to fire agonisingly wide of the left hand post.

With ten minutes to go Robinson was tearing through again. This time Skiba came out to tackle the striker on the edge of the box but the ball fell to Simon Carden who steadied himself before lobbing a fine effort goalwards only for it to be headed off the line and over the bar by Danny Ellis.

Four minutes later, the Reds finally got the goal that they had been threatening. Wilson was found out on the left with time and space and the young striker made finding the back of the net the easiest task in the world – learning back before curling a superb effort round Skiba.

And that should have been that. However, when it looked like the men from Manchester were going to swagger out of town with all three points, Guiseley dug in deep to show exactly why they are closing in on top spot in the table.

With seconds remaining, United found themselves stretched at the back, Chadwick tried to head a dangerous cross to safety but it fell invitingly for Lloyd who was unmarked roughly 25 yards out. The former Huddersfield Town full-back smashed a stunning half-volley into the top left corner to seal a dramatic draw.

Match Report

The good, the bad and the ugly were on display at Gigg Lane on Wednesday night as FC United lost their first game in eight games, going down by one goal to Eastwood Town.

But as ever it wasn’t without some controversy as many felt Eastwood’s penalty award was a little soft and most felt aggrieved when United’s claims for a return spot kick were turned down at the beginning of the second half.

The teams took to the field separated by just one point and one league place, and the evenness of the match was reflected in the first half as both sides enjoyed good build up play but lacked that cutting edge in the final third.

The Reds were kept at bay by a tough looking defence, which was reinforced by a durable midfield that closed down any ball coming into their half making it hard for United to create anything of any meaning.

Eastwood may have had one eye on their big FA Cup tie with Wycombe Wanderers a week on Saturday, but if anything it spurred their players on to play well looking to get their names on the team sheet for the second round tie.

It’s testament to the Eastwood defence that the only chance United had in the first half was after 40 minutes when a Chris Baguley shot from outside of the box was parried out by ‘keeper Shane Redmond for a corner.

The visitors had more success coming forward and called on Sam Ashton to make a good one-on-one save after only six minutes, and not long after the Baguley chance Ashton needed to save acrobatically from Lindon Meikle’s shot cutting in from the right wing.

In a first half of such few chances it was a shame that the deadlock had to be broken by what could at best be describe a soft penalty, as winger Andy Todd went down in the box and stuck an arm out. Most thought the referee had blown for Todd’s Maradonna impression, but in actual fact the man in the black pointed to the spot claiming Todd had been brought down by Adam Carden.

Some may have asked Eastwood striker Ian Holmes “Do you feel lucky? Punk” and he certainly did as he blasted the ball straight down the middle of the goal to put the visitors a goal to the good just minutes before the interval.

In fairness to the first half the lead was more the Eastwood had deserved and the impetuous was now on United to stage another comeback.

Rob Nugent was brought on at half time for Adam Turner and it was good to see the defensive pairing of Nugent and Chadwick reunited once more.

When Simon Carden was hacked down in the Eastwood box only minutes into the second half it looked a stone wall penalty to everyone watching, including the referee’s assistant who waved his flag signalling for a spot-kick. However, the one man whose opinion mattered didn’t view it as a penalty and ensured that United fans were waving more than a fistful of dollars at the referee come full time.

For most of the second half the visitors looked to waste time at every available opportunity and in looking for an equaliser United may have had more luck trying to escape from Alcatraz, but they tried every which way but loose none the less.

There were slight half chances for Simon Garner, Kyle Wilson and Carlos Roca but those were either fired over the bar or straight into the ‘keeper’s arms.

In truth most of United’s attacks broke down at the first phase and when they struggled to pass from defence to midfield they often resorted to the long ball forward which also led to nothing.

Needing the comeback, Margy threw Chadwick forward looking for someone to make something of the long ball and captain marvel almost did it as he teed himself up and volleyed just wide with minutes remaining.

In reality United struggled as their opponents closed everything down, even throw-ins deep inside the United half were chased down and due to this any moves were hard to get going.

United must now dust themselves off and look to Sunday’s big FA Trophy match with Boston at Gigg Lane on Sunday.

FC Triumph in 5 Goal Thriller

Newcastle Town 2 - 3 FCUoM

A last minute winner from Simon Carden sealed victory for the reds in a five-goal thriller against a skilful Newcastle Town side before a Lyme Valley Stadium record crowd of 1,833 supporters.

Carden's coolly taken volley sealed an amazing comeback for United who found themselves not only trailing 2-1 just after the hour mark, but also with striker Rory Patterson being forced to go in goal for the injured Sam Ashton.

In the end, hard work, determination and committed, attacking football snatched all three points for Margy's men, sending the travelling masses in to euphoria on the terraces.

Midfielder Steve Spencer broke the deadlock half an hour into the game when he followed up a Patterson shot which had been parried by the home side's goalkeeper Richard Froggatt.

Patterson latched on to a knock on by Stuart Rudd and was unfortunate not to get himself on the score sheet with a shot from just in side the 18-yard box, but it didn't matter because Spencer was on hand to make it count.

Newcastle's top scorer and former Aston Villa trainee Dave Berks grabbed an equaliser five minutes before the break.

And then with the home side enjoying some possession, his strike partner, Nick Wellecomme, gave Town the lead just after the hour mark.

Castle had a sustained amount of pressure in the build up with the reds failing to clear their lines before Wellecomme got on the end of a cross from the left wing.

Whilst scoring, Wellecomme collided with Ashton who had raced off his line in a bid to close him down.

The young United 'keeper definitely came out of incident the worse of the two because he had to be helped to hobble off the pitch and could take no further part in the game.

Nick Platt was thrown into the action to replace Ashton with captain Patterson donning the 'keeper's jersey and gloves for the last half hour.

At this point things were not looking too good for the league leaders, but manager Karl Marginson took the opportunity provided by the break in play due to Ashton's injury to rally his team with an on field team talk.

Whatever, Margy said certainly worked because the Reds pulled together and Carden grabbed two priceless goals.

The first came with 15 minutes to go when Alex Mortimer curled in a free kick from the right wing, Rob Nugent was perfectly placed at the back post to nod the ball down across goal and Carden reacted quickest to slot it home from two yards out.

If the FC United faithful were pleased with the equaliser, they had just 15 more minutes to wait before the day turned out to be one of the best trips they've ever been on.

With the reds piling the pressuring on, Castle began to panic at the back and conceded a number of corners and throw-ins.

Then, with just seconds remaining, Rudd went over to the left wing to take a long throw-in into a crowded penalty area.

The ball was headed on by a defender and Carden volleyed the winner into the top right corner.

All that was left was for Margy and his team to celebrate and exchange mutual appreciation with the army of supporters before they all got to go home.

FCUoM 8 - 0 Squire's Gate

PERHAPS the only result in doubt during today's game would be who would take home the matchball - four-goal hero Rory Patterson or strike partner Stuart Rudd, who himself netted a hat-trick before debutante Danny Shannon rounded things off.

Going one better than Simon Carden's sixth-minute opener on Wednesday night, it took Patterson just five minutes to put the reds ahead against a team who had already shopped 29 goals in 12 previous league games.

Not to be outdone, Rudd joined the Irishman on the scoresheet 10 minutes later before Patterson made it three just before the half-hour mark.

And wrapping up a satisfactory opening half, Patterson added another two goals before the break to take his season tally to 14.

With the match settled at 5-0 by the time the second half got underway, winger Jamie Pheonix got a run out before Nick Platt made his second appearance from the bench in a week and Shannon also came on to make his first appearance for FC.

To Squires Gate's credit, they did come out with some attacking force after the break, but looked vulnerable at the back, with Patterson and Rudd being denied one-on-ones due by the linesman's flag on several occasions.

Rudd got his second goal of the game on 48 minutes after he latched onto a bread-and-butter through ball and finished cooly past visiting 'keeper Peter Summerfield.

Squires Gate went a further 31 minutes without conceded again, and themselves tested Sam Ashton with two shots blazing across goal, but just wide of the mark.

And when United's seventh goal did arrive, the 3,278 spectators inside Gigg Lane were a little perplexed - none more so than Summerfield himself.

An injury to Patterson made the referee stop the game and when the Squires Gate stopper threw the ball down the re-start play, Rudd gained control and calmly walked into the net.

But as far as outright skill is concerned, the second-half highlight came with just four minutes left on the clock when Rhodri Giggs brought an impressive cross-field ball under control and produced a stunning cross to pick out Shannon, who headed in powerfully for 8-0.

Match Report;

From yesterdays fantastic win over Hednesford Town.

FC United romped to a 3-0 victory over top of the table Hednesford Town in foggy conditions at Gigg Lane on Saturday thanks to a brace from Kyle Wilson and a third from Jerome Wright.

The league’s leading scorer, Wilson took just 13 minutes to find the back of the net as the Reds took a surprise lead against the in-form Staffordshire side.

The visitors tried to battle back in the mist but with United for once looking solid at the back, Wilson grabbed his 22nd of the season with 20 minutes to go and Wright completed the significant upset with five minutes remaining.

Following a crash out of the FA Trophy on Wednesday night at the hands of Boston United, the Reds were sure to be looking for a result in what was expected to be a tough game against league leaders Hednesford.

It was the visitors who were first on the attack in the opening stages, looking for that early lead; however, it was Simon Carden who went for goal in the first five minutes, unleashing a shot from long range through the fog, but posing little threat.

Salford old boy Tommy Turner was next to offer a United chance as he looked to be on target early in his debut for FC. Turner made a run into the area and beat the visiting defenders and keeper to the ball, before attempting to lob Hednesford’s number one, Stuart Brook. Unfortunately, his effort on goal was off target and the ball was cleared to safety.

The Reds looked to be ravenous for the opening goal and only had to wait until the thirteenth minute for leading scorer Kyle Wilson to put the ball in the back of the Hednesford net. Simon Carden played the ball out to Jerome Wright on the left who crossed the ball into Wilson in the Hednesford area. Wilson steered the ball past the keeper’s left on his first time shot to send United into the lead.

Within a minute of the restart, the visitors caught FC off guard and the Reds were almost left regretting their goal celebrations, if not for a Danny Warrender clearance off the line.

In continuing attacking play, Tommy Turner had another opportunity to score his debut goal in a clear cut chance for the FC new boy. Chris Baguley played the ball through the middle to Turner for a one on one with the keeper. The resulting shot on goal from inside the area was saved, and bounced off the keeper to safety.

The beginning of the second half saw Hednesford starting strongly and searching for their equaliser. Just after the kick off, the visitors had a penalty claim as they went through on goal. Their appeals were turned town and instead United were given a free kick as the referee judged the Hednesford player to have dived.

A chance fell for FC as Kyle Wilson went through on goal to the MRE’s chants of ‘we’ll never see Sam Ashton’ through the thickening fog. Wilson squared the ball to Tommy Turner who was able to retrieve the pass and come back inside for a shot on goal which was blocked by Brook.

With half an hour to go, Sam Ashton made an excellent save to prevent a Hednesford equaliser. The ball was crossed into a foggy FC area and was picked up for a shot on goal. The ball was going in at the foot of the left hand post but Ashton managed to get down and push the ball out for a corner in what was surely a vital save as Hednesford pushed forward in a bid to get back into the game.

Kyle Wilson doubled his own score line and that of United on 70 minutes when he put the Reds two nil up. Turner picked up the ball on the break in the midfield and played it through to Wilson on the edge of the area. The FC forward rounded the keeper and calmly slotted the ball over the line to bring his season’s goal tally to 22.

Tommy Turner was substituted on 76 minutes after a promising debut, and was replaced by Nick Robinson. Minutes later, Carlos Roca came on in place of Adam Carden, just in time for United’s third goal of the game. Roca played the ball down the line to Wilson who sent it into Chris Baguley in the area. Baguley missed the ball and it went straight across the area to Jerome Wright who hit a storming shot straight through the keeper and into the back of the net.

As the game came to a close, Hednesford were unable to offer anything to the proceedings and as the full time whistle blew, United were able to celebrate an excellent performance and a much deserved victory. The Reds will surely be pleased with a fantastic result against the top of the league who were undoubtedly outplayed by an all round good performance from FC United in front of the 1946 at Gigg Lane. United will now face Woodley Sports in the League Challenge Cup away on Tuesday night.

Match Report

FC United crashed out of the League Challenge Cup 3-0 at Woodley Sports on Tuesday night as the Reds’ young side couldn’t compete with the UniBond Division One North outfit.

A brace from Paul Collins and one from Gavin Salmon eased the hosts into the next round as injuries and illness forced FC United manager Karl Marginson to give a testing run out to a number of youth team players and a few older heads including player-coach Darren Lyons.

Salmon broke the deadlock after half an hour, Collins added another eight minutes later before sealing victory by putting a penalty past debutant goalkeeper Grant Shenton in the 61st minute.

Shenton was put to the test early in his debut when he made an excellent one handed save in the first five minutes. Woodley captain Sam Walker hit a shot from 25 yards out and the FC keeper acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar.

Pressure around the United goal became a recurring pattern as the half went on as Woodley offered headers on target and continued to hassle the Reds’ defence. Shenton was tested again on 20 minutes when Woodley were awarded a free kick 35 yards out. Walker hit the shot low and hard and Shenton did well to get down to his right hand post to make the save.

For all his hard work in the opening stages, it was unfortunately ultimately the fault of Shenton that Woodley scored their first goal on the half hour mark. A poor kick out from the keeper was collected by Woodley and as Shenton failed to get back in time, the FC number one could only look on as Salmon slotted the ball over the line.

The home side added to their lead eight minutes later courtesy of Collins. The United defence was left wide open and the Woodley number 11 was able to run through the Reds’ back line to hit his shot low into the bottom right hand corner.

As the half drew to a close, the Reds continued to have limited possession and struggled to get the ball out of their own half, resulting in Margy’s men going in at the break trailing two - nil.

United made a change for the second half proceedings as Jamie Mack replaced Sam Freakes in the midfield. Papis Dieyte offered a chance for FC as he drove a shot across the face of the Woodley goal from the left. Unfortunately for the Reds, no one was on hand to put the ball in the back of the net.

Carlos Roca presented a further chance for United, sending a header just wide following a cross from Tommy Turner, who was making his second appearance for the club.

Despite a marked improvement from United, Woodley looked set to add to their score line and should have done 15 minutes into the second half following a one-on-one with the keeper. Salmon received the ball from the midfield and should have sent the ball into the net, but instead put his shot just inches wide of Shenton’s left hand post.

Woodley continued to go forward and it was evident that the Reds were struggling to judge the bounce of the ball on the unfamiliar artificial surface. With around half an hour to go, John Buckley and Shaun Connor were given a chance when they replaced Chris Baguley and Papis Dieyte.

Just minutes later, Woodley put the game beyond doubt when Collins slotted a penalty past Shenton. United’s Adam Turner tripped the Woodley player in the box and Collins stepped up to the mark to send the ball over the line as Shenton dived the wrong way.

Roca and Robinson proved influential in attacking opportunities for the Reds but cruising on a three - nil lead, Woodley continued to pressure the FC goal. Shenton added to string of good saves as the ball came across for a header on goal. The debutant FC keeper stopped the initial attempt on goal and then made a second save from Paul Collin’s rebound shot.

As the full time whistle blew, United exited the League Challenge Cup with a disappointing result as they struggled with a team decimated by injury and illness. The positives United take from the game were an excellent debut performance from Shenton in goal and the undoubted experience many of the youngsters will have gained. The Reds will be hoping for key players to be back to full health for Saturday’s away clash with Eastwood Town.
