It looks like my Win7 on the SSD in my PC is somehow corrupted ... it says something like system registry file is corrupt or missing. I have tried a repair using the bootable USB, it says finished, but it still won't load and I get the blue screen with writing on and then a shutdown.

Unfortunately there are a few files on the SSD that I would like. As my only other computer is a laptop it seems that one way is to purchase a USB to SATA Adapter, take the files that I want off the SSD and then re-format and reinstall W7. Hopefully the SSD isn't 'broke.

Does anyone know an approx. price of that adapter as I have no idea and don't want to over pay too much. I'll try somewhere like Pantip.

As an aside I went away for one week, on returning I started the PC and windows started and then it crashed. It did this twice and then wouldn't even give the first bleep ... just the fan started. I took it to ACER (still under warranty) it looks very clean now .. they said that it started ok with their hard drive but not with my SSD ... I said ok let me have it back as I didn't want them reinstalling anything.

Thanks

Just go buy an external USB enclosure box for the drive....they cost around Bt350 but of course there are overpriced ones at twice that cost....many computer stores have them...be sure to get one that is USB 3.0 as there are plenty of USB 2.0 enclosure boxes out there also....USB 3 is much faster than USB 2...of course you need a USB 3 port on your computer to take advantage of USB 3 speed. Gosh, I've got a half dozen or so of the enclosure boxes, USB 2 and USB 3, around the house which I have built-up over the years as I upgrade/upsize a hard drive in my computer and then just put the old hard drive in an external enclosure box to use it as a backup drive.

Sorry for being stupid, but why would you have important files on a SSD

Why would you leave important files on a drive that isn't backup up, regardless of what type it is?

Actually I have two hard drives in the PC in addition to the SSD ... and I back up to both and also to an external drive. It's just that I keep a couple of things on the desktop that I can't remember if they were backed up as the latest copy or not before I went away. It's no big deal ... I read that having a USB to SATA adapter can come in useful so I'll get one. And, for me interesting to play about with. Just wanted a ball park figure for one.

Thanks Pib for the suggestion ... Crossy made the same one.

Of course I have everything backed up 3*

I didn't say that they were important (someone can't read or understand plain english or it's not their first language) and that I didn't have a copy, just that I would like them as it would save me a few minutes updating and down loading a few pics again from my phone..

Why is it that you always get some '----' or '----s' making the above sort of comments. Totally not required .... must be bored

For zero cost and little effort you should be able to boot Linux from a USB memory stick and use it copy your files from the SSD to another drive, assuming that they are still readable.

I bought one of these earlier today cost 450THB ... happy as I got everything off the SSD that I wanted and have now re-installed W7 on it ... just working through the driver updates and windows updates.

I know you were probably in a hurry to get the adapter and the USB 2 adapter you got will work just the same as a USB 3 adapter except about 3 times slower which makes a big speed difference when reading/writing a lot to the external drive like doing an image backup to the drive or just copying a bunch of files to the external drive.. But of course you also need a USB 3 port on your computer.

Pib ... I couldn't find a USB3 one where I was looking ... you are right USB3 would have been the better bet for the future.

Now it's installing 178 updates ...

Office Installation has just failed at the last minute ... it could be a long day!!

Yea, I hear you. There are still a lot of USB 2 products out there, especially in Thai computer stores. Good luck on the software re-install....it can be such a joy reinstalling software and getting it set back up like you want it--NOT!!! Computers can be a pain sometimes...very painful. Preaching to the choir I know.
