All immigration checkpoints placed on alert to prevent escape attempt by abbot murder suspects

BANGKOK: -- All immigration checkpoints across the country were ordered to watch out for two wanted suspects in connection with the murder of a temple abbot in Udon Thani province on May 1 after the police feared they might flee the country.

Royal Thai Police assistant commissioner Pol Lt Gen Panya Mamen said he ordered all immigration checkpoints on alert after the police searched the Aek Udon hospital for more evidence early this morning when a suspect, Mr Bancherd Chatphaitoon, executive chairman of the hospital, was implicated as a mastermind of the murder of Phra Bandhit Subandhitto.

The search by a 100-strong combined force of commando police from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), Fourth Region Provincial Police, and soldiers came after CSD police were able to capture the gunman identified as Panja Chalisen, 49, in Kalasin province.

The man was an employee of the Vocational Education Commission Kalasin office.

His confession led the police to hunt for a police sergeant who drove for the gunman.

Panja said he was paid 50,000 baht by the police sergeant Charnchai Soisangwarn to shoot the abbot.

Pol Lt Gen Panya said the executive chairman’s office room at the hospital was locked, and he was not at the hospital.

Search at his residence also couldn’t locate him while his wife told police her husband is on a business trip in the provinces, the assistant commissioner said.

He said another team of commando police from the CSD and Fourth Region Provincial Police and soldiers also searched the house of Sgt Charnchai Soisangwarn to search for evidence linked to the murder.

He was not in but only his 76-year-old father.

A .22 rifle mounted with telescope, several rounds of .22, .357 rounds of ammunition were seized.

But the father told police that all belonged to his son and didn’t know when he left them at the house.

The police sergeant was said to be the person who drove the gunman to shoot the abbot. He then drove the car to a sawmill and hide it there until the police raided the mill and seized the car.

The mill owner told police he knew the officer but did not know the car left at his mill was used in the shooting.

The assistant commissioner said the police sergeant might have fled to Laos.

However he ordered all immigration checkpoints to watch out for Mr Bancherd and Sgt Charnchai as they might use the channel to escape.

The success in divulging the controversial murder case came after the Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Somyot Phumphanmaung ordered immediate transfer of two senior police officers of Udon Thai police after investigation into the murder of the abbot of Wat Pator Sisied temple, Phra Bandhit Subandhitto, handled by one of the officers, produced no progress.

Besides, the two officers also have close association with the owner of the private hospital, Aek Udon, suspected to be involved in the murder of the abbot.

The hospital executive chairman has been questioned by local police but he denied any connection.

The national police chief later assigned the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police to take over the investigation, and the new probe team has made significant progress in the investigation.

God I love this place !!! :-) Everyday feels like April 1st. In the real world police are

tasked with stopping crime. Here they commit crime....I have said time and time again

if they want to reduce crime in Thailand, simply fire all the police......

Will the full story of this ever come out ?

A Buddhist abbot's murder is allegedly arranged by the executive chairman of a private hospital and a police officer. In addition two very senior police officers are transferred because of their relationship with the businessman and who knows what else ?

Another amazing story in amazing Thailand.

With regard to the credibility of the present Government ,Junta, whatever. Allowing this nonsense to continue really is not doing anything for your image. The murder is one thing but the follow up is just ludicrous and it happens all the time.

...search by a 100-strong combined force of commando police...

Wow, so this is actually in the range of possibilities for the cops? Then it’s a kick in the face of all the family members of victims of Chalerm's siblings, the Ferrari cop killer, and many more…

A number of days ago this story was featured on the news. The police said they had the gun man and they NAMED these two people that are now on the run as possible suspects.

They gave them notice they would be calling for christs' sake ! ............... and they are surprised when the suspects couldn't be found. It is so blatant by the BIB and what's more they don't care. w00t.gifbah.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gif

Because ... they simply get 'transferred' from their lucrative posts to somewhere less so. THAT is what is wrong with this silly little country, in a nutshell. It's RUDE to punish those who have power/money. Mushroom pickers et al, not so much. Children.

Yes. These three words in particular, are pertinent as to what 'the world' thinks of Thailand right now. Easily found on international mainstream sites not yet blocked.

Police rush to the crime scene and all within 10 months things are improving under the junta police normal rush is about one year.

Are the junta not allowed to pursue cases (read aforementioned) retrospectively?

This is a no brainer, they should have waited to the date whereby the immigrations are off

duty like many of the holidays in this country to make good on their escape... ok, this is

a Thai criminal we're talking about here....

But they do care, they are paid to care, that's why the suspects were given notice.

The BiB doing all they can to facilitate the escape of the murder suspects: Listen up, you had 25 days to escape, now we really, really have to alert border crossings about you, we have run out of excuses to do our job (but at least you can get the notice from the news papers). Good luck!

May 1st!!! Since today is March 25th, I can't even begin to figure out how that date was given!! If it had said "April 1st", now that would make a little sense...."Khun Lek, it's just another one of those ealy April Fool's day jokes". Perhaps that is what was intended, but the writer needs to polish up on his/her English?!!

Which routes did Chalerm's son take?

He went to Cambodia by way of Trat, not to Laos. I think there was a stopover at some island down there where there's a gambling casino, probably owned at the time by Kamnan Poh.
