Looking for somewhere in Prachuap town to stay for six weeks from the end of February until Songkran.

For my wife and young daughter to get out of the smog in Chiang Mai. Not too pricey, air-conditioning and cooking area. I will join for first week. They will have transport. Any ideas?

I have stayed at a place called Palmsweet(not far from the train station, you can hear the trains passing as it is about 50yds from the line, very nice, cooking area out the back, 500 per night but I'm sure she would give a better price for a long stay, or there is the treehouse resort, excellent place, 800 per night but includes use of the big pool and gym, lovely log cabins.

Stopped there for a few days a couple of times en route to Krabi. We stayed at a little guest house right on the sea front. Great seafood restaurant close by. Beautiful views. Could I live there? It is quiet for sure. Definitely worth a look.

I've been thinking of a move to PKK for a while, Phuket is crazy busy with crazy drivers, PKK is the opposite, quiet with considerate drivers, Wing 5 beach is lovely. Edited by Badrabbit

Same here, I make the approx 10hr drive about 4 times a year, love the place, it also has the best Italian food I have had(Il Vino, just outside Wing 5 entrance) also great English breakfast at Twigs.

The only thing I didn't like was Monkey mountain, the monkeys were quite scary and the place was not clean, the Monkeys at the base of the mountain within the airforce base are lovely though, very gentle friendly good looking monkeys, everything else about Prachup was fantastic, great local swimming pool with superb cheap food, can't wait to go back.

Sorry mate but I had to smile when you mentioned "good looking monkeys", I've never really thought about monkeys being good or bad looking!

PKK is a nice quiet town with a small expat community although many more like myself living in the outlying villages and venturing in for the odd beer and Tesco shopping

Re shopping anything out of the Tesco remit and local Thai requirements involves a trip to Hua Hin or Bangkok

Varied hotels and guesthouses available not sure if many offer cooking facilities as requested by Naboo.

After songkran more rental houses are available as winter season stays leave

Beach at Ao Manao nice! well suffering from recent storms at moment and quiet apart from weekends

Plenty of restaurants both Thai and a few foreign including Twiggs which has been sold and now under new ownership and renamed "3 Bay cafe"

Has anyone tried the new ownership? Same quality?

Also had heard Makro bought some land in PKK, anyone know anything?

We live in Bang Saphan so more options in PKK would be nice

Don't know never went in when it was Twiggs. I do know the guys involved now, and from what I heard the soft opening was well received and i did try "Test" one of their new range of home made pies which was excellent i think it opens for real on Monday after being closed for a complete refurb

Yes heard the same i presume it will happen in time as when the border opens Many large New housing developments being built here with big expensive housing so they must think they can sell them. so for sure PKK will grow very quickly and shops like Macro will come

i am happy just to visit and live in the sticks!

Interestingly i visited yesterday seems Thai logic has even struck PKK they have improved/ cleaned the promenade and parts of the improvements are to remove all the rubbish bins, thats not going to improve the beachfront much !

Hi

just wanted to say thank you for this wonderful series of posts. It has inspired me to drive up from Malaysia and enjoy the lovely town of PKK.

Stopped at a beautiful beach resort in a small town north of Surat Thani on the way up called Lamae. Drove for around 100k up the back roads near the ocean. Very little traffic and a wonderful experience.

Looking forward to my next few weeks exploring around PKK.

I notice there is an aquarium near the National Park. Is it worth a visit and how about the National Park itself?

Thanks again

Many things worth seeing around PKK, the science park and aquarium are worth half a day. Go from there to the beach on the airforce and enjoy a chill out afternoon.

Stay away from the south beaches,....go to Pattaya, Phuket, Cha Am, or Hua Hin....don't go to spoil the rest....leave it the way it is...!

Well...golly.

I was not considering the south beaches...but now you perked up my interest.

Going there with a busload of my buddies? What beach you on?

Roads are too narrow and the power lines too low for buses. Most people use bicycles in the city, out Poohy's way they still use buffalo.

Thanks for the kind replies.

Went to the market yesterday and was surprised by the quiet pace of the traffic. Very pleasant indeed.

Staying in Huai Yang......... must be out of season as we seem to be one of the few people in what must be at least two hundred villas. (Anybody know how to get the Netflix menu off Swedish and into English)

Local food at the roadside stops is great. Looking forward to trying some of the restaurants in PKK.

Don't tell the Malaysians but sometimes I think Thai food is better !! (Often lighter and more meat)

Driving habits are much the same I think.... not too bad really. And they use right hand indicators here....... wow........never seen one in Malaysia !!!

Going to head up to the Myanamar border to look around.

Thanks again

Thanks again guys

Went up to the Myanamar border at Singkhorn. Enjoyed the market but the shops in the main had the same stock.

Made a visit to Wing 5. Very impressed. Will return on the weekend when it is a little more lively. Loved the town at the southern end of Wing 5. Lots of good food that I look forward to sampling.

Was hoping to buy some quality Thai triangle cushions to take back to Malaysia. Do they sell this type of thing in PKK?

Cheers

Thanks Poohy

I did see a few of them when we were up there during the week but they were more of the roll up mattress type.

Will try again over the weekend. What day and time is best for the weekend border market.

Thanks again

Hi Silornis, where is Lamae exactly? Is the beach nice? Can't seem to find anything on google maps except Amphur Lamae in Chumporn which is inland.

Will be doing the same drive later this year and always keen to check out new places.

Hi Lurker

It is Lamae Chumphon.

Lamae does show as inland but it also has a beach section to the east of the highway. Look for Route 4019 and the "Majaeo University at Chumphon."

The hotel we stayed at was called the Lamae Beach resort on route 4019. (It is sign posted and you cannot miss the giant kangaroo out the front.) Rooms were around 100MYR for standard to MYR 150 for the sea view. Very clean and comfortable.

The beach view is nice but the water is very shallow and by the look of the small rippling waves the last section is mud. There was a good pool but because it was in the direct sun it was a little warm.

The highlight for me as I mentioned was the country roads along the sea front. The roads were great quality and well sign posted. We drove at least 70k up the quiet roads and could have gone further.
