Nakhon Ratchasima Ravaged by Violent Storms and Drought

The Nakhon Ratchasima province has simultaneously been plagued by drought and violent storms. Farmland and buildings have been damaged or destroyed as a result. Over 250,000 families in 159 tambons have been affected, and 32 districts have now been declared drought zones.

Now, a violent storm that carried heavy winds and rain has caused damage to the already-fragile province.

Strong winds knocked over a 30-meter tall radio mast in the Muang district. The mast fell onto a roof a family’s home. Those same winds knocked over a tamarind tree and crushed a sedan carrying a mother and daughter. Thankfully, both the mother and daughter survived the incident.

Electric poles and trees were uprooted by the heavy winds, smashing into homes in Pho Klang. A ceiling in Saint Mary Hospital collapsed after being slammed with heavy rain. Patient beds and computer equipment were damaged as a result of the collapse. Initial estimates of damages to the hospital are several million baht. Repairs will take approximately two weeks to complete.

Several other districts in Nakhon Ratchasima were also affected by the storm, and local rescue teams have been dispatched to areas that were hit the hardest. Despite the heavy rain brought by the storm, several districts are still facing a drought crisis. Officials have not given any details on how the province will cope with the drought or damages from the storm.

Thirty two districts have been declared drought zones and in just over a week the annual criminal waste of water will start.

Here in Soeng Sang we had every day about an hour of very heavy rain and winds. Yesterday electricity was cut for 1 hour
