This block, right next to the Mono Place hotel and within five minutes of UD Town, looked okay. I spoke to (I presume!) Nancy, but the place was full. Last year it was (I think) 3,100B a month - cheap. Anybody stayed there long term? That whole area is chock-full of 3,000-5,000B studios. Maybe I'm easily pleased, but for most of the day you could bimble about and the scooters weren't too bad. Shlepping out of Nancy's - or something similar - and being in the gym in UD Town in five minutes has its attractions, particularly if it's then one minute to the food court and five minutes to the park with an iced coffee. Any obvious negatives that I've missed? smile.png

Even the Mono Place hotel - which was 350 a night - would seemingly take 3,700 a month, so yeah, Udon looks like good value. I just wondered whether there was something I was missing - does "Nancy" charge 50 baht a kwh, and the lease and meter is in Thai?!

[Knowing the little I now know I think a kitchen on the back balcony is a necessity. I really need an hour every night of working my way through 1,500 kcals of carbohydrate while watching mad regional telly. The Mono Place doesn't offer that, but there's plenty nearby that do. I noticed that Udon's now on Google streetview, which should up visitor numbers a bit].

I've been staying very near here off and on for 9 years. As u say, very convenient.....I walk or cycle everywhere. Have u walked around Nong Bua lake yet....? Over the railway crossing, turn left, then right into the Chinese Temple to park bike.

I spent a month in Nong Khai - which looking back was probably a mistake, but maybe a necessary learning experience - so I only had four days in Udon. Crossing the tracks right at UD town and turning North into the little park was my favourite bimble. On the last day I sat in the little pagoda thing set out in the water and ate my sandwiches thinking, "This is a swimming to Cambodia moment" - 28 degrees, a breeze, the park pretty much to myself, awesome stonework on the pagoda. That stone pedestrian bridge that you can see with your back to MacDonald's at UD town - 150m to your left/East - has a great little market on the South side, and if you walk through the market there are some excellent little studio flat complexes. For a man who likes his routines it had a lot going for itsmile.png

Do you mean six finger Nancy,? known locally as one Hell of A Tank .

Have stayed in the Mono ,many times , ok , ish .

It is near soi kartoey , and Rajabhat , Univwub.png

Be sure to ask for age ID , there have been many incidents of Bib , set ups in this area.

With big pay offs Reqd , to avoid the monkey house . Gypsy warning .coffee1.gif

The Lotus Condotel , is a far better option , with a good in house restauarant , and what a brekky.

The learned Night porter , is well aquainted , err .

with the wants and the needs of the lonely and vulnerable foreigner .wai2.gif

Very, very interesting. Nancy had been speaking to me for all of two minutes before she had put her hand on my chest and coquettishly told me that I was handsome facepalm.gif

I nearly said, "I'll bet you say that to all the boys", which would have been good seeing as it seems that she does.

I'm guessing that Rajabhat's Thai language course ($500) doesn't come highly recommended.
