UTCC slashes GDP forecast to 3.2%

BANGKOK, 16 April 2015 (NNT) – The Center of Economics and Business Forecasting of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has slashed its GDP forecast for 2015 by another 0.8 percent in light of several negative factors.

According to the Center, the country’s GDP is likely to grow 2.2 percent during the first quarter of this year and reach 2.8 and 3.5 percent in the second and third quarters respectively. The country’s GDP is predicted to peak at 4.2 percent in the fourth quarter.

The average GDP for this year is estimated at 3.2 percent and might dip below three percent, compared to the earlier forecast of four percent. The export growth would nosedive to 0.4 percent instead of the previous prediction of 4.1 percent. This year’s inflation rate is likely to drop to 0.5 percent from the earlier estimate of 2.3 percent.

The UTCC ascribed its downward projection to several negative factors, including volatility of the global economy, falling agro-product prices, high household debts, an increase in production costs, higher cost of living, termination of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and a stronger baht.

Positive factors that may help prop up the country’s economy are namely political stability, economic recovery of some countries especially the US, government investments in infrastructure, the establishment of special economic zones, a pickup in tourism and the Monetary Policy Committee’s reduction of interest rate to 1.75 percent.

NRC has 10 days to debate draft charter

BANGKOK, 16 April 2015 (NNT) - The Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) has revealed that once the draft charter is officially made public, it must be deliberated by the National Reform Council (NRC) within ten days.

CDC Second Vice Chairman Manich Suksomchitra claimed the 2014 interim constitution stipulates that a ten-day deliberation period must follow any official release of the draft charter.

Therefore, the CDC chose not to publish the contents of the draft charter to the public until it was ready for submission to the NRC.

After the deliberation period, all other parties such as the Cabinet, the National Council for Peace and Order and the general public will have 60 days to propose amendments. The 60 day period will conclude on July 23.
