then if they grab the camera part the recording part can be hidden away

Using a USB webcam would require a PC installed in the car which wouldn't be practical. You could use a WIFI dashcam and transmit the video to a smartphone mounted in your car somewhere or to a smartphone in your house assuming you are parked close enough to your home.

Assuming they leave in the direction the camera is pointing, but I guess it's better than nothing.

It won't film someone coming in through a passenger or drivers door unless you face it either of those ways.

You are correct but if they bump the car while outside or try to enter the car unsuccessfully then you will have footage of them leaving.

There are dashcam camera systems that accept 6 cameras (Front, Back, Left, Right, Driver and Passenger).

The Blackvue unit I purchased has parked mode, which will start recording if it detects slightest movement so yes if the door is opened the unit will start recording video and audio but if they nick it from your windshield then well you are screwed anyway.

Combined with the Power Magic it will work in parked mode (with motion sensors).

I disagree, the DOD LS430W is half the price of the BlackVue and has better quality video especially

at night with WDR technology and 1.6 aperture lens to let in more light in dark surroundings.

It also has a 15mbps record Bit Rate opposed to the 9mbps of the BlackVue.

You'd be better off buying two separate cameras that way you'll get full HD

video front and rear.

Also if one camera fails you only need to replace the one, not the whole 2 channel

set up you listed at 4950bt.

The G1W is a good value for money camera and sold here in Thailand.

I don't think BlackVue are sold in Thailand (that's the reason why the mention in this thread of online ordering and import tax), so Singapore or Malaysia are the nearest countries with an official distributor.

Blackvue are one of the best known brands from South Korea, where just about every car has a dashcam.

When you buy a new car in Thailand you often get free floor mats and free tinting. In South Korea you get a free dashcam.

The reason I purchased mine in Singapore was because they didn't offer the model I wanted in Thailand. The model was purchased from http://www.blackvue.com.sg/ paid using paypal and shipped to my home in about 2 business days. The model is DR650GW-2CH (16GB) S$528, Power Magic Pro S$55 with Delivery S$40 then on top of that I paid 1500 baht for the import taxes. There are models that can be purchased in Thailand much cheaper but not the model I wanted. Once I have it installed I will post some pictures but that will be a while as I am traveling now.

On the newer Blackvue models you need to have the International version to be sure that the GPS/speed function works in Thailand. Some of those sold here are imported from Korea and are not the International versions, even if everything is in English. No problem with the older models - the GPS works on the non-international version. Look for the badge on the box.

I have the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH (which has forward and rear facing cams)... It was unavailable online in Thailand (i.e. monzy shop.com).

I purchased the cam in the UK on a recent visit.

It works fine here in Thailand with full GPS functionality (I guess it was one of those intended for the international market) but I was a little unsure until I installed it and saw it working.

A couple features that may be of interest:

1) While driving if the unit detects an impact it protects the recording automatically.

2) Unattended impact where the unit will start recording if it detects an impact even while the vehicle is turned off.

3) Dual channel recording which means front and rear.

4) Audio recording.

I haven't found one that does all of these things but I am looking. If you know one that has all of these features please let me know.

Tips for new users:

1. If there's a chance that you might not be able to read a number plate spell it out phonetically so that you can hear it when played back. If your Thai spouse is with you ask her to state where from (ie read the Thai letters-"Bangkok").

2. Carry a spare SD card. In event of accident swap them so that you cannot overwrite clips before you've had the chance to upload.

3. Carry a pin & reading glasses in case you have to use the reset button!

Ask me how I found about about the latter!

My favorite clip to date involves a pillion passenger using an acoustic guitar as an airbag when the bike hit a static car because they were going too fast. I didn't know what had happened in real time but couldn't help laugh when I viewed the file

The more expensive models come with both mounts, enabling drivers to switch between their primary and any other vehicle quite easily.
